About this ebook
With few other options, African-American classical musician Gethsemane Brown accepts a less-than-ideal position turning a group of rowdy schoolboys into an award-winning orchestra. Stranded without luggage or money in the Irish countryside, she figures any job is better than none.
The perk? Housesitting a lovely cliffside cottage.
The catch? The ghost of the cottage's murdered owner haunts the place.
Falsely accused of killing his wife (and himself), he begs Gethsemane to clear his name so he can rest in peace.
Gethsemane's reluctant investigation provokes a dormant killer and she soon finds herself in grave danger. As Gethsemane races to prevent a deadly encore, will she uncover the truth or star in her own farewell performance?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is is a new series for me and has started well. Classical musician Gethsemane Brown has left Dallas to travel to Ireland for a position with an orchestra there. Once she arrives, she finds out that the job was given to someone else and she is stranded. Her luggage has been lost and she has not money to return home. She accepts a position turning a rowdy bunch of schoolboys into an award-winning orchestra. For living arrangements, she ends up housesitting in a lovely cottage that once belonged to one of her musical heroes, Irish composer Eamon McCarthy. As she settles in, she comes face to face with the ghost of the cottage's murdered owner. He is thrilled that not only can she see him, but she can hear him as well. Many years before, he was falsely accused of killing his wife then committing suicide. He begs Gethsemane to clear his name so he can rest in peace.
I love the character of Gethsemane Brown. She is a brilliant African American woman, who is an accomplished violinist and conductor, is quite beautiful, is athletic and has a great sense of humor. I also loved the setting of this story. The cozy village of Dunmullach is inhabited by a delightful cast of characters - a priest with a rather eclectic taste in reading material, a flashy psychic, a good-looking and hard-working police inspector, the attractive fellow teacher, who is known for his historical practical jokes, schoolboys who are either shy, or pugalists, yet very talented, and some less than savory gentlemen who try to intimidate Gethsemane, but do not have a lot of success. We can't forget the local village pub and all its customers.
As a newly conscripted amateur sleuth, Gethsemane sometimes gets in over her head, but her near scrapes only serve to make her even more tenacious. The dialogue in this story is one of the best parts of the story. The witty, light-hearted banter between her and Eamon's ghost sparkles and entertains. The boys and the way Gethsemane puts them in their places is so honest and refreshing, no wonder they like her so much. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am glad the next book is already on my kindle to read. The mystery and investigation do not have a lot of clues; it is one of those, being in the right place at the right time, asking the right questions and using intuition to solve the crime. It was a bit unexpected, but the motive was true and the reveal was well done. I definitely recommend this cozy mystery to lovers of mystery with a little paranormal twist, Amateur Sleuths, and/or the Irish Setting of a small village. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Wonderful characters, in particular protagonist Gethsemane Brown, along with all those that populate the Irish village she lands in, come delightfully to life in this compelling mystery. The reader/narrator was extremely adept at voicing the different dialects-- and I so admire anyone who has that unique acting talent-- so that the plotting and Gethsemane interactions with the seconcary characters just flowed effortlessly to advanced the story. The novel's setting gave me a feeling of being transported to a place I'd love to visit, enhancing to the whole listening experience and making it a simply charming debut to a new series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5cosy-mystery, murder-investigation, music, law-enforcement, ghosts, suspense -----I loved it! The investigation was well done, the characters clear and personable, the plot twists diabolical, steadily building suspense/frustration, and the ghost a real hoot. You don't have to be a classical music aficionado or a baseball fan to appreciate this delight, but it does help if you have more than a passing acquaintance with Irish names. Me, I relied on the excellent narrator who made them sound as familiar as my pronunciations of Eastern European or Norse names. Great plot even if you don't normally care for mysteries with ghosts. See the publisher's blurb for more clues. Jessica Carroll not only has a pleasant voice and a gift for interpretation, but saved me a lot of angst over pronunciations.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Delightful cozy mystery set in coastal Irish village featuring a sidetracked American classical musician and a stuck spirit. Think "Ghost and Mrs. Muir" with a feisty Mrs. Muir and her amazing right hook.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Diverting, a good debut. the protagonist still needs development. The ghost has more substance than Gethsemane
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed the Irish setting more than the plot and went online to learn how to pronounce all the Irish names. Gesthemane Brown was a strong character, though a bit too much at times with her whiskies and lies. Eamon the ghost was a rather typecast Irishman with the beautiful eyes, "Darling" this and that, charm laced with anger. I would have liked more development of the youth orchestra characters. A light and mostly cozy mystery.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Gethsemane Brown’s life isn’t exactly going as planned. Her dream job was given to someone else, she ends up teaching at a boys’ school in Ireland, and oh, yes, a ghost asks her to solve his murder. Not your run-of-the-mill task! But never one to back down from a challenge, Gethsemane throws herself into the search for his killer. Meanwhile, she has to shape up the boys’ orchestra, hoping to win a competition, and solidify her place the school, just in case she wants to remain there. Though the murder took place many years before, it seems that Gethsemane has spooked the killer into action again, as more people meet their demise. A lively ghost tale, this adventure is sure to please. But be prepared to keep reading the series – not everything is resolved in this first installment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The whodunit was a little too transparent but the characters are so lovable. This sucked me right into the world and I can't wait to read the next one.
