Introduction
Way way out in the universe, the star, Polaris began to flicker. Polaris knew this signified the beginning of the end for him, so he took a part of himself and stretched it out to the abyss. He released it, and the dust swirled before him until it became a distinct form. Amaryllis,
he breathed and the tiny star flickered in reply. I give you my blessing of innocence. Now, I’m sending you forth because I do not have long, but I will send another behind you so you are not alone. Do not forget that I love you, no matter where you end up.
With that, he blew the star away hoping that it would find a safe home. He pictured a woman who was lonely and would need someone to keep her company. Surely she would appreciate this gift and take good care of his Amaryllis.
Years passed and Polaris grew weaker until the time came when he knew it would be his last. He breathed in, and with his final breath, he breathed out another tiny star, making sure to instill within her a blessing of wisdom. This time however, he couldn’t speak. His light flickered out and she fell from his grasp and into darkness.
It so happened that Amaryllis found the lonely woman that Polaris imagined on the day she was borne. She lived within the core of the Earth’s moon, a land hollowed out as a haven for the for human-like creatures that could change form called the Nahuālli. This woman, called Cordicia, had the ability to change into an arachnid which could produce the finest silk. However, the other Nahuālli kept their distance from her because she was known to be cruel. In fact, she had her own territory because no one dared draw near her. When Amaryllis first fell from the sky and into her arms, she treasured the child, but Cordicia’s heart soon turned dark when she discovered that Amaryllis could weave her silk into beautiful lace. She refused to let Amaryllis leave the castle in which she lived for fear that someone might discover her gift. Amaryllis waited for the person her father promised to send in the hopes that she would be rescued but years passed and no one came for her.
A thousand years later and not too far off, the other star landed on the doorstep of a noble Irish family in what Earthlings would claim as the two thousand one hundred and eleventh year of our lord. The couple named her Mab and loved the girl with all their heart.
But even before Mab spoke her first words, another Earthling had taken interest in poor Amaryllis. It was on the day Amaryllis, the innocent devoted daughter, decided to rebel against her mother and send all the lace out the window while Cordicia was sleeping. The lace was so long that it fell through the clouds that served as the castle’s foundation, through the crust of the moon and continued on even further past its deep craters.
Even from the Earth, the lace could be seen like a loose strand on a ball of yarn, but no one took notice save for Sonny, a young king from the very same country as the couple that had found Mab. He had become king at a young age when his father and mother were murdered by a mad crow. She even kidnapped his father’s advisor so that no one was left to care for the young boy except for the servants. The boy could still remember when he discovered his father’s cold body and ran to the sea with tears in his eyes. He didn’t know this was his destination, he just knew he had to run. A man stopped him on the rocks and asked, Why are you crying?
When the boy explained what had happened, the man led him back to the castle and stayed by the boy’s side from that day on.
Now, as Sonny looked up at the string in amazement, he called out to the man who had practically raised him, Lyric! What is that?
and like any proper young lad he added, It looks like a booger!
That, young king, would be what looks like some lace coming out the the side of the moon,
his advisor commented.
Mm, nope. It’s definitely a booger. Hey! Let’s go check it out!
As he said this, Daylight, Sonny’s pet bush-viper, wrapped around his arm as if to anchor his owner down.
Lyric rolled his eyes, "Sonny, how many times do
