Chapter One
I allowed Star to trot along at a steady pace. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the early morning; the only sounds being the birds in the trees, calling to each other among the branches, and the odd rustle among the grasses as smaller animals looked for their breakfast.
As the sun’s rays beat down on me, I pondered what papa had announced at supper last night. That I was to be wed to the local Earl filled me with dread. I wanted to marry for love, but Papa had insisted that it was the only way that we could keep our family afloat. I literally had no choice but to accept.
The MacDonald clan had owned the lands for generations. Some time ago, Papa’s own father had begun to allow tenants to take over some of the vast acres for themselves. Then, he could take their rent to keep his own home, while the lands was kept arable by the farmers.
My heart ached to know that Papa was in such financial hardship. Everything had changed when Mama died of pneumonia four years ago. Molly, my elder sister, had taken over the running of the house, while Papa continued to work on our own farmland.
With Mama no longer here though, he had taken to drinking in the local bar more than a few nights a week, riding into town to meet with his friends. Staggering through the door in the early hours, he was either singing happily or weeping for Mama. It broke my heart to hear him.
I often wept into my pillow at night, quietly sobbing for my Mama. Wishing that I could have just one more day with her, to see her cheery smiling face, to be held against her bosom once more. Each day the pain eased a little, but I knew that it would never truly leave me.
Papa’s eyes were brimming with tears as he spoke about his meeting with the Earl and having to explain to him that he
