What? he breathed, every trace of life-colour eroded from his face.

I’m pregnant. She held her voice stable and calm; her freezing fingers fastened together that laid neatly on her lap, knuckles turned white to keep them from shaking.

Dante’s hand fell from her face, dropping down to the mound of thick white blankets. He closed his eyes, a moment passed before he opened them again. A resemblance of bitterness and cynicism showed through the nadirs. You’re pregnant? he said painfully, backing away from her to stand up by the window; his eyes intently focused outside—though, Hazel suspected he could not see anything pass the resentment and her shocking news. I thought we were going to wait until our first year anniversary? he asked quietly as he raked his long digits through the messy curls that crowned his head, rubbing the stiffness at the back of his nape.

    We were, she answered helplessly.

Then what the hell went wrong? he thundered.

The allegation strike at her with an agonising discomfort, depriving her of speech. Hazel had known it would become a surprise to him—had expected it but in some way, Hazel had never dreamed of coming across the old Dante Santino again. Ruthless, and calloused. The same man she had met for the first time. The warm, loving husband was long gone.

His broad shoulders tensed. I thought you were taking the pill? If you have known, why didn’t you take the morning-after pill? he whirled around, illuminating an expression that radiated discomfort and fury. We talked about this! We agreed that we will wait until we are both ready, and it looks like you have already decided by yourself. You planned this without my consent!

The accusation threw her aback, the outer rim of her mouth-parted open as she gaped up at him. With a diluted effort, she said, I did not know. I took the pills just as the doctor had instructed. I had no idea I was going to fall pregnant—and it could be possible for me, as you did not even use protection! The medication I was given was a low doze, Dante. The doctor had warned us about it, did she not?

Dante stood immobilised. A stricken look had appeared on his face, a papery-white colour replaced the warmth of his energy. You must have known you got knocked-up! How could one woman not know?

Because my sickness had not started until a day ago, she hurled, letting her skull fall on her knees, masses of blonde mane covered her features from his gaze.

You could have prescribed for a stronger medicine, that way things like this would never have happened. He grumbled angrily, pacing around the room.

I couldn’t do that. She replied meekly.

    She had not
