Goddess of Fire - R.L. Phoenix
Chapter One
––––––––
A chill ran down Andraste’s spine, as her boots clipped on the concrete pavement. The air was crisp in the darkness, and a cold breeze whispered over her ears. The first drop of rain fell and splashed against her cheek. She shivered, and wrapped her tattered coat tightly around her body.
‘Great, perfect end to a rubbish day.’ She moaned as the rain began to fall in a steady rhythm. No doubt her grubby landlord would be waiting at her tiny one bedroom apartment for the already overdue month’s rent. The little sweaty man had an uncanny knowledge of when she returned to the ramshackle building on the wrong side of town.
There was no money to give him.
Not after her jerk boss had asked her to stay behind and earn extra money in his bar, for a private party. A private party of one—pervert.
To him, his offer
had been a favour to her, his eyes running up and down her curvy body—Andraste had not missed the predatory gleam. Foster care had taught her to be vigilant, and to read the body language of people carefully.
A sick sensation welled up. She covered her horror with a sweet smile, before giving a polite reply of driving his balls back into his body cavity. It was at this point they had mutually decided they needed to part ways.
A trickle of water ran down her neck, and grabbing the well-loved beanie on her head, she yanked it further down over her ears.
This was not how she expected her day would end.
Andraste’s muscles tensed as the rain fell steadily. Scanning her eyes along the darkened path, she watched for debris that would force her to change her course.
Streetlights loomed tall monoliths in the darkness. University students often kicked the base of the poles dislodging the lamps from within. The eerie lack of light caused a shiver to run down her spine and flow over her.
Her pace slowed and she eyed a darkened hanging glass.
Please, just a little light.
A wink and flutter of light caused her breath to hitch and steps to falter. Could it possibly be ...?
Between one blink of her eyes and the next, it was gone, making her doubt that she’d even seen anything at all. Shoulders slumping in disappointment, she picked up her rapid pace in the darkness again.
‘Idiot university students,’ she mumbled into the wool scarf wrapped tightly around her neck.
The rain continued to fall, and dampness seeped into her clothes. The moon peeked through a gap in the dark clouds, temporarily illuminating her surroundings.
Out of the corner of her eye, shadows flicked quickly on the brown brick walls. The clear sound of feet splashing through a puddle could be heard.
Heart banging in her chest, she halted her rapid pace and stood momentarily, ears straining for the slightest sound. She tried to peer into the darkness. Her mouth ran dry, and she licked her tongue over her parched lips.
Water splashed and echoed from behind her, and her spine stiffened. God I wish I’d learnt karate. Forcing her dead legs to move, her heart hammered against her ribs, as the repetitive splashing of water echoed close behind her.
Increasing her pace, Andraste ran as fast as her legs could carry her.
A male voice sang out, and she could hear rapid footsteps moving in the darkness. ‘Hey fatty, why don’t you just give it up?’
Her thighs burned, and she couldn’t even think about the parts of her that were
