    Chapter 1

The crumbling urban park was completely silent as the sun broke through the smog. The early morning would usually bring out a few joggers, but the park’s demolition was scheduled for the next day and it had been closed. The steady thump, thump of a single pair of jogging shoes broke the quiet.

A slim woman with dark brown hair escaping a ponytail, and a broad smile slipped through a gap in the barricades. She stretched her hand up, running her fingers through the tree leaves. She tilted her face to look at the beams of early morning light.

Tree roots crossed the path. One seemed to rise up as she ran and caught her foot underneath it. She slammed into the trail. Her head bounced. She didn’t move. The roots twisted and moved around her. The earth seemed to rise and fall as a breathing chest might. The woman’s chest didn’t seem to move.

The sun moved across the sky.

    Chapter 2

Excuse me, ma’am, can you hear me? A man with deep brown skin and a tight cut for his black hair knelt next to the woman. She moaned and moved slightly. Ma’am, what’s your name?

The woman pushed herself up to sitting, slowly. The man put an arm behind her, not quite touching her, ready in case she fell. I’m Heather. And yes, I can hear you. She shook her head slowly, as if trying to clear something out.

Hi, Heather. I’m Re. Do you know what happened to you? He ran his eyes over her quickly. Heather frowned in confusion. The trees shook to an unfelt wind.

It’s the day before they destroy the park. Why are you here? She snapped and frowned. Everything was too loud, even the rustling of leaves seemed cacophonous.

Same reason as you, a final run in the park. His voice was soft and soothing. You were lying on the ground, it looks like you might have tripped. I’m a paramedic. I want to make sure you're ok. How are you feeling?

I think I’m ok. My head hurts. What time is it? She leaned toward him and swayed away.

We should get you to the ER. You must have hit your head pretty hard. He moved closer, still not quite touching her, but following her movements.

No, no I don’t need an ER. Heather’s voice was sharp. Re moved away, but only a little. She sagged.
