It’s meant to convey layers, depths. Unexpected, unpredictable layers and depths.
An Emergence of Green
Katherine V. Forrest
1
Anna waited for Phillip outside the empty building, where the exhibition opening was due to take place. There was a lot of comings and goings, colorful people came to this event. Anna was wearing a knee-length red coat and found that it fitted well with the occasion. She looked around relaxed, Phillip would surely be there soon. A woman wearing a long black dress and a wine red bodice drew her attention—she was striking.
Phillip approached wearing chinos and an open pilot jacket. His brown curls, that kept getting longer and longer, were jumping wildly across his face. He hugged her and Anna kissed him on the cheek.
Oh great, what will people think now?
It’s kiss proof, don't worry.
She had painted her lips to match the color of her coat.
Why don’t you kiss...
he looked around, her.
He indicated the woman in the black dress.
Not bad taste.
Anna gave the woman a radiant smile. Where is your jack of hearts?
You know that Seth...
...never comes to Berlin.
That's not entirely true,
Phillip objected.
Well. Either way, I meant the gallerist.
Don’t talk nonsense.
We'll see.
Anna laughed and hooked her arm through his. Phillip had called right after talking with the gallery owner and she had laughed about the fact that Phillip had tried to flirt with the much older man in order to get his support for their artist’s group. But of course calling him the jack of hearts was just a joke. In any case the gallery owner had offered them the opportunity to develop an exhibition and that was why they were here.
They entered the building and looked around. The walls of the deserted building were covered with different layers of paint and wallpaper remnants. The chalky paint chipped off the window frames. The rooms were lit with construction lamps and candles, on the walls hung pictures and photos, and some sculptures were distributed throughout the exhibition.
They picked up a glass of champagne and then went further in. Phillip nudged Anna and said: there he is.
Not bad.
The man was in his mid-forties, attractive, slim, with gray hair and fashionable glasses.
First of all he wants to broker an exhibition for us.
They walked in his direction and the gallery owner came to meet them.
Good evening.
Phillip shook his hand. This is Anna.
I'm very pleased to meet you. Glad you could make it.
How do you like the show, Sir?
asked Phillip.
Please, call me Christoph,
he replied.
Gladly, Phillip.
He held up his champagne glass to Christoph and they clinked glasses.
Have you already had a look around?
No, we just arrived.
So far I like the photos the best.
Christoph indicated them and Anna followed his gaze. A Brazilian photographer.
Anna looked at the photos. They showed young people in hotel rooms, alone, in pairs, in a group of four. The images were bathed in a warm light, and traversed by melancholy.
Yes, very natural, no models. Somehow they remind me of a film I saw from South America,
said Phillip.
Could be.
Christoph sipped his champagne, observing Phillip.
Do you carry similar exhibitions?
asked Anna.
I specialize in painting. Contemporary artists. What do you think of these?
Christoph led them further and stopped before a large image with vibrant colors. A green creature, like a faun, was looking at a woman over his shoulder. A blue chimera with small breasts and an engaging look. Two African girls, whose pigtails were snaked around each other and linked together. The vibrant brush strokes accentuated the effect of the motifs.
Great,
said Anna plainly and moved to read the information about the artist. Phillip looked at every single picture, while Christoph stood close by him.
Excuse me, there’s someone I have to talk to,
said Christoph after a while, look around, it's a fantastic exhibition. I’ll introduce you later.
Is this the style he shows in his gallery?
asked Anna after he was gone.
No, not at all. At least not what’s hanging there at the moment... don't ask me. Stick figure and abstract lines.
Understood.
Anna kept looking at the painting in fascination, then slowly went further into the space. Do you know whether the painter is here?
Could be. Perhaps Christoph knows.
He seems nice in any case.
I told you he was.
They walked slowly through the rooms. They mostly agreed on the paintings and drawings , but when they reached the photographs they had different views. Phillip was a photographer through and through, while she herself preferred a graphic style, but also appreciated painting.
Finally they stopped still in front of a delicate sculpture. Metal and polished wooden boats were linked together in a floating construction. The slender boats on metal rods were similar to a mobile and moved easily in the air.
Christoph joined them quietly. A friend of mine made this piece, Eva Wanjak.
I love it,
said Anna and ran a finger over the base. There was a card with information about the artist on the side.
Is the painter here?
Phillip pointed to the pictures that they had previously been considering.
I think so, we can look for her. But first come with me.
They followed Christoph, who introduced them to two young guys with beards and pegs in their ears. She showed them the flyer and materials about their group and its work.
We can certainly take a few pieces for our next exhibition,
said one. They exchanged contact information and agreed that Phillip would bring
