It’s the third time this week Da.

He sounded distracted but it was hard to tell when she couldn’t see his face. He’d rejected her video call, had chosen only voice instead. What was it that he didn’t want her to see?
What about dinner?
she said.
Don’t worry about dinner, I’ll get something here.
I can wait for you.
No don’t do that. You fix something for yourself. Look I’ve got to go, I’ll try not to be too late.
She thought she heard laughter in the background.
I love you Da.
Love you too,
he said and the phone went dead.
Jade turned off the oven. Yet another dinner gone to waste. She could feel him slipping away from her but she didn’t know how to stop it.
She heard his key turn in the lock and rushed to the door to greet him.
You’re still up?
he said dropping a kiss on top of her head. I’m sorry I had to work late again but it won’t be for much longer. Alex will be up to speed soon.
Alex. His new partner. Alex, who it had taken him three weeks to tell her was a woman. Alex whose perfume she smelt on him whenever he came home after working late.
It’s okay. You’ve got a job to do and you have to do it.
I knew you’d understand.
He gave her a hug. I’ve invited Alex for dinner tomorrow night. She wants to meet you.
Why would she want to meet me?
