About this ebook

The brief was simple.
The package had arrived with explicit, time-sensitive instructions.
Everett Stone had missed the deadline.

Twice.

The threats and warnings had come. Just as he'd anticipated.
He had three weeks to take out the mark or he’d be the one being fitted for a toe tag.

This particular mark wasn’t what he had expected, at all.

From the moment he set eyes on her he’d learnt the curve of her smile, the way she moved, swiftly, with purpose, and the way she looked at him made him sigh with desire.
There had been several beautiful women he’d felled and had immensely enjoyed doing so in cold blood.
With her, it was different.
He was different.
He’d lost his edge. Gone soft. Dropped the ball.
He didn’t know how to fix it.
Until the perfect solution landed in his lap.

    About The Author

    ∞Chapter 1∞

All that was left of him was a splash of blood on the dusty ground alongside her NYPD issued handcuffs. The only sign that he’d ever existed.

There were three cars parked in the garage. She ran unsteadily towards the first and grimaced with every contact between her feet and the hard dry ground. She tried the door handle. The alarm sounded immediately and her head whipped around to check she hadn’t alerted anyone to her presence. It shocked her into action.

She tried the door handle of the second vehicle, parked a little further away. She tugged so hard on its handle that it sounded its alarm in concert with the other vehicle.

To her right, a screech of rubber tire on concrete made her stand stock still with fear. Half naked, no duty weapon, no chance of escape before whatever was coming towards her in the late model Buick with tinted windows that took her in its grasp. She covered her face with her arms to protect herself.

    Get in!

The voice was incredibly loud. It boomed at her as the car door swung open and Marla had to squat down to see the driver.

    What the fuck, Martin?

You called for assistance! Get in!

Detective Martin Michaels was Marla’s sister Beverley’s friend but Martin had recently admitted that he liked Marla. Fortunately for him, Marla was painfully single thanks to her intense work schedule.

That first day in the Detective’s Pen at N.Y.P.D.’s Thirteenth Precinct, Martin had felt so compelled to introduce himself to her at the Community Toy Drive Marla organised every year.

She was all about motivating the Youth in the community. Keeping them off the streets and encouraging them to remain in education. Martin liked the way she lit up inside whenever she was around children. He wanted her to light up inside when she looked at him.

The one and only time they’d gone out for dinner it had been awkward. Both of them had tried too hard to keep the mood light and neither had wanted to try and date again, but had eventually agreed to remain good friends.

Check the bag on the backseat. By the way, you’ve got blood on your face. He tilted his face towards the bloodstain on her shoulder. Marla pulled out sweat pants and a shirt from his gym bag.

I got pistol whipped. Marla mumbled, and then grabbed his phone.

Dispatch. Four Juliet Thirteen. Detective Needles. The ambulance en route to Seventh and Forty-Third is no longer required.

Marla heard the response and then left his phone on the dashboard.

What happened back there? You in a jam?

Martin fancied himself the 1970’s era stereotypical cop from those goddamn awful television shows that aired back then. Marla usually went along with him and added her own cheesy jive-talk, which they laughed about. It was like their own shorthand when they didn’t want to make the situation between them even more awkward by talking about their feelings.

Troy asked to meet him here but we were attacked. He got knocked out but now he’s vanished.

Well then maybe I should drive you around the hospitals in case he checked himself in.

    Why are you helping me?

Your sister will kill me if I don’t.

How did you even know where I was? Did you respond to Dispatch?

    Hmmm. I’d better not say.

Martin, I’m having a hard enough time trusting you. Don’t make it worse.

    I tracked your phone.

What the fuck gives you the right?

Martin clamped his hand over her mouth so tightly that Marla was stunned into silence.

I think we’ve got a tail. Three cars back. The pimped out Cadillac SUV. Marla stared at the rear view but all she saw was her bruised face staring back at her.

I just want to go home.

The SUV overtook their vehicle. Marla stared into the vehicle hoping to get a glimpse of its occupants as it passed alongside.

You’re sure? I can still check if he popped up any place?

I think you’ve done more than enough. Thank you.

Just looking out for you, that’s all.

    And the rest.

    What?

    You’re something else.

Mmm. So Beverley told you I copped to liking you a little bit.

Care to elaborate while I put some clothes on, Detective?

When Marla was playful and acted coy with him, it made the raw, unchecked pain he felt from choking down his real feelings for her even worse.

Enough for one night, don’t you think? Get that cheek looked at will you? Don’t want you scaring off the perps tomorrow.

    Hey, watch that mouth.

You should have stayed at the scene, but if you’re sure you’ll be alright tonight I’ll take you home. Martin’s concern was genuine. He drove in silence while she pressed her hand on her face. The bruise would be worse in the morning.

    Yep.

Before Marla could reach for the door handle to get out of the vehicle, she brushed her long blonde hair away from her face. Martin stared at her and then watched as she rose from the seat to full height.

He lost her attention as soon as she slammed the car door closed. He sat pensively while she waited for a resident to leave her apartment building so she could get in. It reminded her that she now had to get new keys cut. Martin waited anxiously, and then got out of the car before he called up to her.

Any beer in the fridge? He grinned up at her. She was exhausted but she couldn’t be ungrateful when he’d rescued her so gallantly.

Come on in. Marla didn’t even bother to turn around to look at him. He skipped up the stone steps
