Introduction
The Belly Fat Danger
The belly fat is probably the most annoying and stubborn part of our body to go away. We try diets, we workout and whatever we do, it keeps existing. Even people who are not overweight have it.
In 2008, a study involving about 360,000 Europeans (one of the longest health studies in the world) helped Dr. Tobias Psichon find that people with the most belly fat had double the risk of dying prematurely as people with the least amount of belly fat.
In other words, it’s not just aesthetics, self-esteem or sex appeal. Getting rid of the belly fat can actually increase your life expectancy.
You may not be seriously overweight, but that doesn’t mean you are healthy.
How do you know if your health is at risk or not? Easy, by measuring your waist.
DIY Waist Measurement
Remove or raise your clothing.
Exhale and bring the tape measure around your waist, starting from your belly button, or about half an inch below your belly button.
Read the number of inches.
For women, 35 inches or more is cause for concern. In metric units is 89 centimeters.
For men, 40 inches or more. Or, in metric units, 101 centimeters.
If your waist is wider than the threshold, then you should seriously consider losing some pounds of belly fat until you get to a healthy waist of less than 35 or 40 inches, depending on your sex. Not necessarily to have a six pack or increase your sex appeal, but to increase your life expectancy, live longer and get to enjoy your family and friends for longer.
And if you are a cool person, which I’m pretty sure you are, then you give them the gift of hanging with you more. You get to know their children, their grandchildren and enjoy more stories with them.
The Belly Fat Struggle
The thing with belly fat is that it’s so difficult to get rid of, because we don’t have the mind prepared for the struggle ahead, we try a bit, and then, when temptations arrive, we are helpless and we give up.
We know that getting rid of the belly fat is important, but cravings and temptation are too powerful. Why? After interviewing athletes and fitness experts I found out a pattern.
The way they look at food and exercise is different than the way most overweight people do.
For example, I used to be a compulsive eater, if I was with my friends, and I heard the sound of wrapping paper, like the sound of someone opening a bag of potato chips, I would instantly ask What is it? Can I have some?
If I had a big bag of potato chips, I would eat it until I ate every single chip in the bag, leaving it empty.
And one of my friends, Alonso, who has a waist under the threshold, a very healthy person, he would have a bag of potato chips beside him, calmly, it could be there for hours, and he would not be tempted. He has this amazing control over food.
I would ask him several times... Are you going to eat that?
trying to establish that I wanted it in case he didn’t; to what he would respond Yeah. Later
. How can he be so calm around food and not be tempted like me?
One reason is because he has control over food, instead of the food having control over him.
He is not an athlete or
