About this ebook

Something in Jake’s relationship with Connor is changing, and not for the better. The only thing that’s been growing between them recently is silence, and when Connor starts lying about where he’s been and slipping out of bed at night, Jake fears the worst.

Jake gets the surprise of his life when he finds out what Connor has really been doing. It couldn’t be further from what he’d expected. Instead of ending the relationship, Connor has been building up to taking the next step together with a huge romantic surprise for Jake.

The scare shows Jake what’s really important, and the ordeal might make them stronger and bring them closer together than ever before.

Bru Baker

    Chapter ONE

WE’RE ON for karaoke this week, right?

Jake looked over at Blaire incredulously for a moment. She was sprawled on the blanket he kept in his truck so they could eat lunch outside on warm days. Not that the cool February afternoon qualified as warm, but it was a bit above average for Portland that time of year, and he and Blaire had been in a stifling meeting with a very picky client all morning, so they’d taken their lunches outside to get some air. The blanket didn’t do much to ward off the chill from the frozen ground, but at least there wasn’t any snow.

They were the only ones out on the grounds at the moment, since no one else was crazy enough to head outside to eat bundled up in thick coats. They’d claimed a tree on the edge of the building’s grounds, so they were sheltered from the city noises somewhat, and if Jake closed his eyes and ignored the way his feet were going numb, he could pretend the weak sunshine on his face was actually warm. He missed the bright Texas sunshine, and he’d learned to take advantage of the handful of clear, sunny days the Pacific Northwest offered, even if the temperature left something to be desired.

She didn’t say anything more, so he ignored her in favor of flipping through the calendar on his phone to see if he’d have to spend the rest of the afternoon in meetings or not. Looked like yes. Crap. He hated the days where he spent more time talking to people about working than actually getting out there and doing the work. His crew was on a job downtown, but he’d been called in to schmooze with potential clients instead of being on-site with them for the day. They were up against a tight deadline, and Jake knew he’d be spending his evening going over the wiring and plumbing to make sure everything was ready for the building inspection tomorrow. They couldn’t afford any more delays—literally. They were already dangerously close to missing their completion date, and since it was a state project, the company would owe a penalty. It wouldn’t come out of his pocket, of course, but it would be a black mark on his record he definitely didn’t need.

Dropping by the building site tonight meant grabbing dinner on the go again, not that it mattered. He could eat alone in his truck or alone in the kitchen at home. The takeout options around his apartment sucked, so he was probably better off anyway.

Blaire snapped her fingers in his face. He waved them away with an annoyed huff, still going over his to-do list in his head. The electrician on this job was new to his team, and Jake hadn’t been impressed with what he’d seen from him so far. He’d have to give the wiring extra attention when he went out to the site tonight.

Karaoke, Blaire said. Friday? Gabe’s coming too.

That got Jake’s attention. He glanced up with a laugh. There was no way the owner of the commercial construction firm they worked for would be caught dead in a bar with his underlings, let alone sing karaoke with them.

    Right. Our boss, singing karaoke?

She was silent for a moment, and he congratulated himself on heading off whatever prank she was planning before it had even begun. He’d just opened an e-mail from one of the seemingly endless string of middle managers he had to cater to on a daily basis—was anything worth three exclamation points in the subject line?—when Blaire piped up again.

Friday at eight, Jake. It would look bad if you weren’t there. I’ve already told Gabe you would be.

Sure. Maybe he’ll want to sing with me, eh? While we’re at it, I’ll sing one with Connor. I’m sure he’d agree.

He didn’t bother to try to hide the bitterness in his voice. Blaire couldn’t know that karaoke used to be his and Connor’s special thing. They hadn’t been to a karaoke bar together in years, even before their recent rough patch. A fair number of Jake’s happiest memories with Connor involved croaking out terrible songs and tossing back inadvisable amounts of cheap beer.

Right now Gabe was more likely to come out to sing karaoke with them than Connor, as ridiculous as that thought was. Jake definitely saw more of his boss these days than his boyfriend, which was one of the reasons he wasn’t overly upset about working through dinner. Jake hadn’t had dinner with Connor in a few weeks, even though they lived together. Connor’s work schedule had gotten crazy, and Jake found himself volunteering for extra projects simply because he hated being home without Connor. It felt weird to be there with their roommate, Gavin, whom he barely knew, so Jake ended up spending most of his time holed up in the room he shared with Connor.

Blaire, as usual, didn’t catch the stiffness of Jake’s tone or the hurt in his voice. She had a blind spot a mile wide for anything related to Connor. If you’re the one asking, Jake, you know he will, she said, bursting into laughter as Jake made a rude hand
