    THE BRIDGE AND ITS MOTION.

    AS seen in the introductory chapter, the bridge serves to communicate the vibration of the string to the belly of the violin. We saw also that the amount of air vibration generated by a single string is very small, so that the sound produced is very feeble.

    Significance of the Bridge’s Motion.

    Suppose a bridge standing on the belly of an un-stringed violin and under a pressure as large as that of the four strings together, swinging around its right foot and making exactly the same motion as when mounted on a stringed violin and put into motion by the string. Then this unstringed instrument would produce the same tone as the stringed instrument, only a little
