About this ebook

From the internationally admired creator of the 87TH Precinct series come these tales featuring policemen and their work and displaying Ed McBain’s inimitable talents in shorter form. . . .

In this collection of short stories, bestselling author Ed McBain presents a varied and colorful cast of characters who run afoul of, then into, the arms of the law. . . .

A collector who loves his porcelain more than his daughter; a hooker who melts the heart of a tough cop; an ex-fighter who goes berserk at Christmas; an automobile dealer out for a funny business ride. . . .

Ed McBain’s bestselling works put him in the very top rank of crime writers. In The McBain Brief, he more than justifies his reputation as a master storyteller.

Ed McBain, a recipient of the Mystery Writers of America's coveted Grand Master Award, was also the first American to receive the Diamond Dagger, the British Crime Writers Association's highest award. His books have sold more than one hundred million copies, ranging from the more than fifty titles in the 87th Precinct series (including the Edgar Award–nominated Money, Money, Money) to the bestselling novels written under his own name, Evan Hunter—including The Blackboard Jungle (now in a fiftieth anniversary edition from Pocket Books) and Criminal Conversation. Fiddlers, his final 87th Precinct novel, was recently published in hardcover. Writing as both Ed McBain and Evan Hunter, he broke new ground with Candyland, a novel in two parts. A dozen or so mystery stories by the master. Some strange, some eerie. All wonderful. I love this passage: "...he carried his mouth like a switch knife, ready to squeeze open at the slightest provocation." What wording!!!! Read it.

While I'm a big Ed McBain brief, much of the allure of the novels stems from the familiar characters (the characters at the 87th Precinct or Matthew Hope and his buddies down in Florida) and from the quirky plots that develop as the novels unwind. These short stories don't have either of those luxuries. While they're interesting, they're just so-so.One complaint I had is that there's no way of telling when each story was first published. Clearly, some of them go back to the 50's and 60's when police work was far different than it is now. Society has changed, and so has the law. Attaching dates to each story would have helped provide context.
