You use your salary to pay-up all your debts and bills - mortgage for the house or pay for the rent, monthly payments for the car(or cars), credit card bills, phone bills, internet service provider bills, water bills, electricity bills, gas bills, groceries, allowance for your kids going to school, tuition fees for your kids, and so on.
