Introduction

“The starting point of all achievement is desire!” Yes, that is one thing that we need to keep in our minds. Until and unless we start anything we won’t be able to complete it or master it, so for starters we need desire. I would ask that you have the desire to learn oil painting, before you take on reading and using this book. If you have the desire and want to learn then just turn the page and here I am to teach you how to paint birds in oil paints with all my will and spirit.

I won’t say that it is difficult to paint in oil paints; rather I would say that you have desire to learn and to paint. So, let’s get ready, fasten your seat belt as we head off on the journey of learning.

    Oil Paints

    A Short Introduction

I will just briefly introduce you to the World of oil painting.

Oil paints were used by Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Buddhists but they took over the old techniques of painting in about 15th century. In Italy and Greece, artists used olive oil to paint but it took a lot of time to dry. According to Giorgio Vasari the oil painting techniques that are used today were invented by Jan Van Eyck. His techniques were modified over the time and every generation played its part in improving the technique.

Oil paints have been applied via brushes, hands, feet, directly from the tubes, and as well as with palette knives. Artists have used many techniques of application over the period of time and are still experimenting.

    Materials Needed for Oil Painting

You will be needing canvas, flat brushes, round brushes, linseed oil, turpentine oil, a piece of cloth, your oil paints, set square, pencil, a palette, and last but not the least the desire to paint.

Linseed oil gives a shine to your painting and makes it durable whereas turpentine gives a matt finish to your painting. Linseed oil is a yellowish oil and turpentine is colorless.

The figure on the next page is of set square. It makes drawing 90 degree angles and straight lines really easy. Set squares are also used in technical drawings and engineering. It will help us a great deal on the drawing of our graphs.

You can see below a palette and oil paint tubes. Choose any
