Chapter One
The door to the old abandoned house lay open as I stepped inside followed by my three sisters. In the living room where sun from the open front door poured, I looked around the room finding no one else besides us present. The musty smell of the abandoned home met my senses as I ventured further in. A spattering of dust, mold, and cobwebs covered the ramshackle old wood of the walls. Tree limbs grew through broken floor boards as glass lay strewed along its walkways and dark corridors. It was dark and damp with the tale-tale signs of the one distinct odor that gave it away to the identity, or rather the kind
of its last occupants. I could tell by the look on my sister’s faces, the smell did not please them either; in the mustiness was also the scent of something else.
My senses reacted to the smell of a few vampires who had used the home recently as a shelter from the sun, but who were now long gone from the abandoned dwelling. I let my nose smell out the scent again, there had been at least three of them; I could smell their distinguishable scents permeating my enhanced nostrils. I knew then, this is where they had held up for the last few months. We had only missed their departure by maybe a night.
I couldn’t believe we were actually standing in one of their lairs. So much for avoiding danger at all costs. My sister Mattie came up to stand beside me, she was angry and had every right to be. I reached out a hand to try and calm her, I would always be angry too, but she had suffered through more than any of us had. She wanted revenge, we all did. Kara,
she said with her teeth bared in anger. We came here too late, maybe we should have come sooner.
I was sure they would be here, we will find them, Mattie.
I knew we couldn’t be far off their track; they would have to take shelter from the sun again eventually. And like every other night, we were getting closer, and every night, they were able to elude us as if they were being tipped off before we got there. But if so, then by who, or what?
My eyes shut hard against the thought of running into those bloodsuckers again. My skin crawled with just the mere thought of one of those dead creatures touching me. I will admit that I was acquainted with a few, and maybe one that I could say had my trust. But most of their kind, I couldn’t trust. They would as soon bite you and make you a midnight meal. As for me, I have never been forced to shove a stake through one of their un-beating hearts. But you can trust that I would if I had to. And the bloodsucker we were hunting for now, I would gladly make him my first. The bear in me was itching to get out and rip some vampire flesh with its razor sharp claws. Deep breath, Kara, deep breath.
When I was finally able to calm myself, I turned back to face Mattie as I reached out to hold her hand. Together we were all strong and those bloodsuckers would soon find out that they had messed with the wrong sisters. I let my eyes scan the room one last time to be sure I had not missed anything important like a clue that could lead us to the vampires new where bouts. Nothing, there was absolutely nothing here.
The sun would be going down soon and I knew that they would not be returning here to this place, they were always on the move now. I looked over at my sister. Mattie, we have to leave this place. There is only a few short hours left before sunset, let’s go, we won’t find what you’re looking for here.
My other two sisters Mallory and Kat came over to stand by us now. Mallory, always the loving and understanding one, flashed a smile in Mattie’s direction. Finding her sisters hand, she held it in hers and looked into Mattie’s eyes. "He may have harmed your body, but
