Projects
PROJECT No. 1
Car Key Cases
This practical project in which many of the fundamental operations are involved may be made in a very short time. Since it is small, scrap leather may be used. It will hold from one to four keys.

Specifications:
To be made from scrap leather with a single line creased around the outer edge. To be fitted with one 3/8″ snap button and one key case binder post. You have a choice of the two styles as shown in Fig. 79.
Tools and Materials:
Steel straight edge, knife, cutting board, heavy paper, single edge creaser, revolving punch, snap attaching set, snap button, binder post, and leather.
Procedure:
A.Lay out on heavy paper the desired style of car key case as shown in Fig. 80. Cut out the paper pattern.
B.Trace around the paper pattern on the leather, using chalk.
C.Cut out the stock. Operation No. 4.

D.Crease a single line with the edge creaser around all edges. Operation No. 14.
E.Use a modeler to crease a line on the flesh side of the leather as shown at C, Fig. 80. Operation No. 7, Fig. 19. This will aid in folding the key case.
F.Locate and set the snap button as shown at A, Fig. 80. Operations No. 18 and 24.
G.Locate and punch holes for the binder post as shown at B, Fig. 80. Operation No. 18.
H.Fold the key case and fasten the binder post in position.
I.Dye all edges. Operation No. 26.
J.Finish the project. Operation No. 28.
PROJECT No. 2
Book Mark
In making this simple project you will do your first tooling. Since very little material is involved, the cost of the project is small.
Specifications:
To be made from natural tooling sheep with the design outline tooled. The size and shape may vary as to one’s originality.

Tools and Materials:
Steel straight edge or tin template, knife, cutting board, heavy paper for design, paper clips, tracer, modeler, piece of marble or plate glass, natural tooling sheep, cleaning solution, dyes, and brushes.
Procedure:
A.Take a piece of heavy paper the correct size and shape as shown in Fig. 82. Develop a design for outline tooling. Operation No. 1.
B.Make a permanent template if it is desired. Operation No. 2.
C.Cut out the stock. Operation No. 4.
D.Prepare the leather for tooling. Operation No. 5.
E.Transfer the design. Operation No. 6.
F.Do outline tooling. Operation No. 7.
G.Clean and dye the book mark. Operation No. 26.

PROJECT No. 3
Wrist Coin Purse
This project takes very little leather and is simple to make. Any child would be proud to own or to make one. It can be made from scrap leather at little cost. The completed wrist coin purse is shown in Fig. 83.

Specifications:
To be made from scrap leather and fitted with a 1/2″ buckle and small snap button. The body of the purse to be stitched together with the running stitch.
Tools and Materials:
Steel straight edge, knife, cutting board, single edge creaser, revolving punch, snap button attaching set, 3/8″ snap button, 1/2″ buckle, size 5 needles, buttonhole twist silk, and leather.
Procedure:
A.Measure the child’s wrist to determine the length of the wrist band. Add 1″ to this measurement.
B.Lay out and cut the leather for the wrist band. Shape the end as shown at A, Fig. 84. Operations No. 3 and 4.

C.Punch four holes for the tongue of the buckle. Operation No. 18.
D.Cut out the opening for the tongue of the buckle. The width and length of the opening will be determined by the size of the tongue of the buckle. See B, Fig. 84.
E.Crease a line with the single edge creaser around all edges of the strap. Operation No. 14.
F.Insert the tongue of the buckle through the opening at the end of the strap. Fold the end of the strap back over the buckle. Cement this end as shown at C, Fig. 84.
G.Stitch according to the instructions given in Operation No. 22.
H.Lay out and cut the two pieces needed for the purse.
I.Skive the edges that will be cemented together. Operation No. 15.
J.Cement the two pieces together with the wrist band between them as shown at D, Fig. 84. Operation No. 25.
K.Stitch around the edges of the purse and through the wrist band as shown at E, Fig. 84. The stitch should be about 3/32″ in from the edge. Operation No. 22.
L.Locate and set the snap button. Operation No. 24.
M.Finish the coin purse. Operation No. 28.
PROJECT No. 4
Wrist Watch Band
This practical project can be made at a cost of only a few cents; therefore, several wrist watch bands may be made using different kinds and colors of leather. The band may be tooled or incised. Fig. 85 shows a completed wrist watch band.

To be made from 3 oz. tooling calf or genuine Cordovan. To be outline tooled.
