About this series
What would the world be like without the Shadow? Particularly without Jace? For most, it might be a relief, but for certain people, life just got a whole lot more complicated, if not downright weird! After a brief cameo in another series/world, Jace is back and eager to show off his new ninja skills only to discover there isn't a Shadow left to impress, instead he has a pocketful of rocks, an old book of stories, and a mission from the Fiend himself. Donning a Famouser Hat of old acquaintance, hunting sea monsters, infiltrating a school for female assassins, and being framed for the Lady's murder are just the beginning of yon scamp's adventures, nobody knows what he will get up to next, most especially Jace himself!
Titles in the series (12)
- Shadow of the Unicorn
Astoria: home of the Brethren, a place of legend, learning, and Truth, and secrets that cannot be told. The Lady thought she knew everything that passed within the walls of Astoria and most of that which happened in the wider world, but there are some secrets to which even she is not privy. What must be hidden at any cost? Why must she remain ignorant of mysterious happenings within her own keep? Can she trust those who would intentionally hide things from her? Discover a boy with a destiny he refuses to accept, a servant that dares defy the Lady to her face, a book of tales few can read, inexplicable comings and goings, and adventures beyond count. Unicorns, dragons, griffins, and other fantastic creatures all have their part while the Truth lies within grasp, waiting only to be discovered.
- The Last Shadow
The Enemy’s final triumph draws nigh, the Time of Revelation looms, and the world trembles at his coming, or it would if it realized its peril. As the days dwindle and the gloom deepens, even the Shadow of the Unicorn does not escape unscathed. Reduced to a single man, but still determined to fight, though forbidden from meddling in the greatest acts of this final age of the world, the Last Shadow does not stand idle nor long alone. Well equipped with his trademark smile and incorrigible sense of humor, Jace is willing to meet the looming End alone if he must, but then that’s never been his lot, even in the darkest days of his service to the Shadow. You’ll find a more detailed and serious account of the last days recorded elsewhere in the Chronicles of the Brethren, whereas this tale is told from the perspective of the most irascible of all Shadows with his usual combination of levity, impetuosity, and boldness and a generous dose of the ridiculous and absurd thrown in for good measure. Join Jace and his friends for one last lark in the world as we currently know it, ere the curtain falls and something far more grand begins.
- To Shadow Bound
The second book of the ‘In Shadow’ series, a series within the Chronicles of the Brethren. It is recommended you start with the ‘Serpent and the Unicorn,’ then read ‘Shadow of the Unicorn,’ before reading this book. Mysterious comings and goings, life and death, all part of the daily routine in the life of a Shadow, but can faith endure when all seems lost? When you are stripped of everything that you once cherished, what then is left? In the face of great evil and in the midst of impenetrable night does hope remain? Is there yet light in the darkness, hope in despair? That is the very question Jace must face, for his adventures within the Shadow have only begun.
- Shadows Fall
Discover a monster in the woods, a Kingdom stalked by shadows and nightmares, and that owning a magical sword might not be so wonderful after all, in this third volume of the 'In Shadow' series, a series within the 'Chronicles of the Brethren.' Start with 'Shadow of the Unicorn' and then read 'To Shadow Bound,' to get the most out of this series, and if this is your first venture into this intriguing world, check out 'The Serpent and the Unicorn,' the book that started it all!
- Legends of Shadow
Jace is at it again, along with a few old friends and a couple new ones, this time in convenient bite sized morsels! We haven't yet found an extant copy of the actual 'Legends' enjoyed by our heroes, but this just might be the next best thing. As usual, nothing is as it seems, especially when Jace is around. Whether you have a penchant for trolls, zombies, pirates, or land-dwelling demon squid, this book has just about everything, well everything but aliens, but that's probably reserved for a multimillion dollar super-secret spin-off series so we'll just have to be content with whatever disaster Jace has stumbled upon this time.
- Lady of Shadow
Confounding the Lady of Astoria is what the Captain of the Shadow does best, at least until he meets his match: a Lady with a secret of her own. Can these two enigmatical leaders come to a mutual understanding of one another and their peculiar roles and work together against an ancient foe? And perhaps more importantly: who will keep Jace out of trouble?
- In Shadow: The Complete Series

Things are not always as they seem; sometimes they are far stranger: a mysterious book of tales few can read, unexplained comings and goings, secrets that must be kept at any cost. Follow the journey of one who suddenly finds himself thrust into an adventure he is not even sure he believes in. Captain of Shadow: What does it cost to be the most powerful man in the world? Is it worth the price? Could you stand to lose everything to attain something you hardly understand? Discover what it truly means to be Captain of the Shadow. When a young Prince finds himself drowning in infamy and betrayal, his whole world is about to be turned upside down, but his adventures only become stranger as the future collides with the past. There’s something downright odd going on in Astoria, and as usual, the Shadow of the Unicorn is at its very heart, but it is the Captain of the Shadow who is behind it all. Lady of Shadow: Confounding the Lady of Astoria is what the Captain of the Shadow does best, at least until he meets his match: a Lady with a secret of her own. - Captain of Shadow
- Shadow of a Doubt
As a new generation of Shadows comes of age, some things never change, most especially Jace. Join the world's most astonishing hero, and a few new friends, as they discover not only what it means to be Shadow, but more importantly, human.
- Shadows of the Past
A few really old friends, and a few new ones, along with Jace's usual zest for zaniness can only mean another Shadow book. You never know what will happen or where (or when) the adventure will take you, but at least you'll make good time, at least when you aren't suddenly stuck in the past, never mind, with Jace around, anything and everything is possible, except boredom. So sit back and enjoy the adventure, and unlike the Captain, you don't even need to pretend mere endurance thereof! And happily, comprehension of his adventures is beyond anyone's ability, most especially of Jace, thus there will be no test, though perhaps a little remedial education is in order?
- Shadow Business
Jace is at it again, no not destroying the world, that's a whole other book though the Captain and most of his veteran comrades certainly wish it was the end of the world, the only sure way of ending his reign of the ridiculous, but rather introducing the next generation of Shadows to his usual impish mayhem! Filled with his usual incomprehensible humor, zany antics, and impossible adventures, delve in if you dare! Don't forget your smile and sense of humor, but any Philosophers in the audience are strongly cautioned, though they may have actually discovered a cure to that unfortunate malady, but you'll have to read to find out.
- Shadows Gather
What would the world be like without the Shadow? Particularly without Jace? For most, it might be a relief, but for certain people, life just got a whole lot more complicated, if not downright weird! After a brief cameo in another series/world, Jace is back and eager to show off his new ninja skills only to discover there isn't a Shadow left to impress, instead he has a pocketful of rocks, an old book of stories, and a mission from the Fiend himself. Susan Skylark
Once upon a time there was a sensible young lady who pursued a practical career, but finding it far less fulfilling than the proponents of the modern fairytale promulgate, she then married a clergyman, much to everyone’s astonishment, including her own, and in proper fairytale fashion keeps house for the mysterious gentleman in a far away land, spending most of her time in company with a very short, whimsical person who can almost speak English. She enjoys fantasy, fairy tales, and adventure stories and her writing reflects this quaint affectation. She considers Happy Endings (more or less) a requisite to good literature and sanity, though real stories never, truly end.
