    Argyle Socks

    Size 10

    MATERIALS—Fleisher’s, Bear Brand or Bucilla De Luxe Sock and Sport Yarn, 2 skeins Main Color (Red), 1 skein each of 2 Contrasting Colors (White and Blue).

    1 set (5) Fleisher’s or Bucilla Steel Sock Needles, Size 13.

    GAUGE: 10 sts=1 inch        13 rows=1 inch

    Wind each skein into 2 balls.

    CUFFS—With red (R) cast on 72 sts. Work back and forth in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 1/4 ins. decreasing 1 st at end of last row (71 sts).

    LEG—K 1 row. P 1 row. Drop R.

    First row of diamond pattern—With blue (B), k 1, twist B and R strands, drop B; with R, k 34, with white (W), k 1, with R, k 34, with B, k 1.

    Always use separate strands for each diamond, being careful to twist strands when changing colors.

    2nd row—P 2 in B, 32 in R, 3 in W, 32 in R, 2 in B.

    3rd row—K 3 in B, 30 in R, 5 in W, 30 in R, 3 in B.

    4th row—P 4 in B, 28 in R, 7 in W, 28 in R, 4 in B.

    Continue to work diamond pattern in this manner until there are 16 rows of pattern.

    17th row—K 17 in B, 2 in R, 33 in W, 2 in R, 17 in B.

    18th row (center row of diamond)—P 18 in B, 35 in W, 18 in B.

    19th row—Same as 17th row.

    Continue to work 1 st less in color on each side of diamonds until 1 st is left in each as in first row of pattern.

    Break B and W strands. Leg should measure about 2 3/4 ins, from cuff.

    HEEL—Slip first 18 sts to one needle, next 35 (instep) sts to 2 needles and remaining 18 sts to 4th needle. Working with R strand at end of last row, k tog B st at end of last row and B st at beginning of row, k remaining 17 heel sts to same needle as first 18 heel sts (35 heel sts).

    First row of heel—Turn, k 1, p 33, k 1.

    2nd row—K all sts. Repeat these 2 rows until there are 32 rows on heel, ending with a k row. Begin to turn heel on wrong side; k 1, p 18, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; k 5, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn; p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; k 7, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn; p 8, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; k 9, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn. Continue in this way to work toward sides of heel having 1 more st between decreases in every row, until all heel sts are worked. There will now be 19 sts on heel needle. Break yarn.

    With R and working from right side, pick up and k 17 sts on side of heel, on same needle k 10 of the heel sts; with another needle k remaining 9 heel sts, on same needle pick up and k 17 sts on the other side of heel. Turn, p back across the 2 heel needles (53 sts).

    First decrease row of gusset—Turn, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 3 sts of end of 2nd heel needle, k 2 tog, k 1. Turn, p 1 row on the 2 heel needles.

    Repeat last 2 rows until there are 9 decreases on each side of gusset (35 sts left on 2 heel needles). Work back and forth on these 35 sts until there are 35 rows from where sts were picked up on sides of heel, drop R and leave sts on needle.

    Diamond pattern on instep—With R, k the first

    17 instep sts, with B, k 1, with R, k remaining

    17 instep sts, turn. Continue to work 1 complete

    Embroider in Duplicate St.
