About this ebook

Ok, so this is a rare occasion where the movie completely surpasses the book. I thought it sounded like it was written by a 12 year old which is completely not what Nicholas Sparks is about. The basic premise was the same as the movie...the names, the ending, blah blah...but for Nicholas Sparks to be a romance writer, it just wasn't there...the movie had so much stuff in it that was wayyy more romantic then the book and usually it's the other way around. Sorry Sparks fans, this one just isn't doing it. A short read but not worth it.

Nicholas Sparks is so bad, I only wonder why I read TWO of his books. Shame on me.

It's the autumn of 1958 and Landon Carter, a local "bad boy", is starting his senior year in high school. After deciding to take drama for an easy grade, he's thrown into a series of projects with the most unpopular girl in school and resident minister's daughter, Jamie Sullivan. At first Landon is hesitant and embarrassed, but after she ominously tells him not to fall in love with her, the two of them embark on a year that will change both of their lives forever.I don't usually read romance novels, and rarely do I pick up anything by Nicholas Sparks. However, I loved the movie adaptation with Shane West and Mandy Moore, so I decided to give the book a try. A Walk to Remember is a quick read clocking in at just over 200 pages. Sparks' writing style is also very sparse and basic. There is nothing difficult in his vocabulary, nor is there a lot of roiling action. Like another of his famous novels, The Notebook, this book is really more of a slice-of-life that tugs at the reader's heartstrings. It is nothing more than a simple story of a boy falling in love with a girl with the usual sappy Sparks twist.Personally, I felt that A Walk to Remember was just okay. The plot was cheesy, the characters weren't very deep or well fleshed out, and the settings were rarely described in detail. It was a lot like looking at a coloring book that hadn't been colored in yet. Sure, you can see the picture and tell what it is, but there is no color or nuance, just a plain black outline. The only reason I could easily picture the setting of Beaufort in my mind is because it is a place nearby that I've visited several times in my life, so I don't particularly need the description (though it would have still been nice). Still, it was a quick, quiet book that was easy to read on my porch with a nice, steaming cup of joe. Sparks fans will love it and devour it voraciously. Depending on whether a romance fan wants more action and less innocence, they might also enjoy this quick romp through Sparks' cheese-filled world. This book also features mentions of Christianity and God pretty heavily, which could be alienating for some readers. I imagine that the average reader could take it or leave it, that is why I give it three stars.

One of my all time favorite Nicolas Sparks novels. I appreciate how religious this book is and how it is set in the 1950's. This is a very easy read and one of those books you cannot put down.

My first Nicholas Sparks book and since I first picked it up, I've probably read it around 20 times.

It's a super cute story about first love and even if there are several clichés, it still makes me cry.

Nicholas Sparks knows how to reach hearts and he does it in such an amazing way that the stories stay with you. His books always end bittersweet; a sad ending which still leaves you slightly hopeful.

Reading up on the author, I found that many of his books are based on situations from his real life which make the stories even more touching.

Meh. After my bad experience with the other two Sparks books I read, I only read this one because I liked the movie so much. I wouldn't say it was really worth the read... in fact I will say this is one of those rare cases where the movie was actually better than the book. The writing also seemed really amateurish in the book. I guess Sparks just isn't my kind of author. I won't be reading any more books by him, I feel like I've wasted my time, to be honest.

Every April, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. The last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister. She was a quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks. Jamie seemed like she was living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie, Landon's partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. I loved this book and have also seen the movie and they are both wonderful. I just wish that I could read this book over and over again.

Not as filling or intense as a multicourse dinner with dessert, but satisfying in its own way, like snacking on a cup of yogurt.Really, I needed something short and sweet in the midst of my heavier (or darker) reading and editing material. I had a keener reaction to the movie than to the book, likely because I saw the movie first, which I enjoyed. The book was nice all the way through, but it didn't affect me much until Jamie finally made her fateful admission to Landon. Not a spectacular work of English, and I didn't shed any tears, but I did smile at some parts, and I think the book did what it had to do.Again, short and sweet. My first literary spin with Sparks--I wouldn't mind taking another.

this was my first Nicholas sparks novel, but definitely not my last. actually it probably wont even be my last this week since i just bought safe haven as a recommendation from my cousin. i didn't read what either book was about before purchasing them and i didn't see the movie. to be honest i have never even heard of Nicholas sparks but i am so glad i found this novel because it was such a great read. i have always been a big fan of tragedy novels and movies and i love a good love story. this one had such great characters in it and was packed full of enough emotion for an entire series. it took place in the 50's which gave the innocents of the characters more credibility and made this story believable. i don't know if i have ever cared as much about a character in a novel as i did about Jamie and the amount of love between her and Landon was so much deeper than any other novel i have ever read.

I have read many Nicholas Sparks books and now keep of box of tissues with me when reading them. He writes 'like a woman' - I love it. I work in a secondary school library and this book is always on loan and in demand with the girls.

This novel is certainly a tear-jerker. It is a romantic tale of teenage love. It begins when Landon Carter must (unwillingly at first) work along side Jamie Sullivan (the goody two shoes of town). But as he gets to know Jamie better, he begins to fall for her, going against the status quo of his friends. he soon learns that Jamie is dying and will pass shortly. However, Landon has grown to love her so much that he decides he must marry her. I love how the title transcends into Jamie's walk down the aisle of her wedding. I also how Landon grows as a person and realizes one should not live by sterotypes or expectations of others.

This book tells the sweet and sentimental story of young first love in the American south of the 1950's. Landon Carter is a normal teenage boy, and Jamie Sullivan is the saintlike daughter of the local Baptist minister. They don't seem to have much in common, but the circumstances of one year throw them together and Landon begins to see Jamie in a different light, which will change his life forever. The story is gentle and poignant, and I enjoyed reading it. However, and I almost never feel this way, I truly believe that the movie was better executed. This may be my personal preference, mostly because the movie softens some of the religious overtones of the book, but I would still say that the book is an enjoyable read. It's also a good romantic story for teens, and was the recipient of the Colorado Blue Spruce Award, which is a literary award voted on by teens, for teens.

This book is a “quick read” and a good addition to any library collection. The plot and characters are realistic, describing emotions that are indicative of high school teenagers. The author poignantly describes the ups and downs of a first true love, as well as school popularity, school acceptance, parent relationships, illness, sacrifices, and quality of life.High school girls will be able to identify with Jamie’s character: innocent, kind, but also different, ignored and not understood. Teenage boys may likewise identify with Landon’s struggles to make changes in his life.

Having already seen the film of the same name, I was interested to see how the book would measure up, particularly given Sparks’s impressive reputation in the ‘weepie’ genre. At first, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. The large print and slightly clunky first-person narrative grated a bit and, at the opening of the novel, gave the impression that it would turn out to be, at best, a poorly-written teen-angst story. However, this impression quickly dissolved as the novel progressed, and it became clear that this was, in fact, a reflection of the protagonist’s youthful awkwardness rather than a narrative fault. The story is recounted by Langdon Carter, a middle-aged man telling the story of his relationship with his wife. At seventeen, Jamie Sullivan is a very good, rather holier-than-thou minister’s daughter who spends all her time reading the Bible, rescuing animals and helping orphans while her peers make fun of her. Langdon, however, gets to know her better and, despite himself, falls in love – only to find out that she is struggling with a terrible secret which will shatter life as he knows it.Of course I expected it to be sentimental; what I didn’t expect is that despite knowing the plot already, by the end of the novel I was crying as if my heart would break. An excellent, moving and inspiring tale of love and strength that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to incurable romantics.

Not sure if I've mentioned before, but, I'm not a big fan of Nicholas Sparks. 'A Walk to Remember' and 'The Notebook' are the only books of his that I like. The reason I read 'A Walk to Remember' was because I saw the movie. The movie was better than the book; but, the book was not bad. It was actually good enough to give it five stars. I would recommend it to people who like romance.'A Walk to Remember' is the story of a teenage guy who ends up falling for the unpopular, goody two-shoes girl. She comes from a Christian family; her father is also a pastor. She is also a very sheltered girl. Which, I think, is because she is sick. There's not much more that can be said without giving away the whole book.

A very nice short read. It made me cry though. I recommend it for anyone who likes romance stories. This book shows a great moral that you cannot judge a book by its cover, or by what other people say about its cover. All in all a very sweet book.

Its been a while since I read this book but found the story poingnant and the writing passable at best. However, I have since had the displeasure of meeting Mr. Sparks during my bookselling experience and do not ever see myself getting that bad taste out of my mouth. He is by far the most arrogant, abrasive author I've ever met (and there are some doozies out there!) When a man acts like that, it become impossible to separate his work from him, so I will likely avoid everything with his name on it from now on, and advise others to do the same. My advice is skip this one and check out The Dressmaker by Elizabeth Oberbeck Bierkland instead--she's great (nice, too).

This book was given to me. I casually picked up the book to read...and then was hooked. I could not put it down. It is written in the first person, and is of a man revisting his past in High School 40 years ago. He was a popular boy worried about what his friends thought. His name was landon Carter, the year 1958 in the small town of Beaufort, N.C.
