This differs somewhat from earlier Alexandra novels in that the title does not include a flower, and that it is written in two different time periods - more reminescent of Kate Morton (another fine Australian author). How it does not differ is that it is an engrossing, sometimes heart-breaking novel about a woman (well, two women, actually) during a traumatic time in European history - in this case the Spanish Civil war. Whilst some of the plot twists may seem a little predictable, it was a highly compelling read and a fine edition to Belinda Alexandra's repoirtre. Contains obligatory reference to Australia too - of course.

If you are interested in Spanish history (20 th century) this may interest you. But be warned, as an audio book this was difficult to follow as Caroline Lee's voice did not provide enough contrast between characters. Add to this Ms. Alexandra's penchant for detail and you have a recipe for a long winded and at times boring book; which is a pity as my first Alexanra read was 'Tuscan Rose' and the reason for listening to Golden Earrings.

Very nice story and an excellent lesson in Spanish history. Maybe just a bit longer than it needed to be. I was ready to wrap it up near the end. I thought the narration was well done.
