    Incident: Exeter Manor

Lord Bainbridge stepped from the carriage that transported him from the Tower of London, where the Queen's office resided. They had spoken about many things; some of which were trivial and some not quite so much. He had much to think about and much on his mind as he set his foot on the first step of his mansion. Exeter Manor was one of the older structures on the outskirts of London, whose gables had gargoyles and other mythical beasts to keep away evil spells and ghosts for those that believed in such things.

    He did not.

He didn't believe in any of that. Maybe if he had he would have survived that night. Maybe not. Belief is not always protection from the unknown and uncertain as some would think.

See you tomorrow morning, Lord Bainbridge. The carriage driver said and then gently guided his horses around the roundabout that came in and out of Exeter Manor.

It was a beautiful piece of property which he had acquired from the descendants of the Knight Exeter, one of the right hand men of King Arthur during his reign. This also explained much of the visionary art inside, as Knight Exeter had collected many exotic pieces of artwork on his travels about the middle realms, where magic was darker and more oftentimes openly used.

Lord Bainbridge took a deep breath of the evening air. Everyone had been drinking heavily at the meeting, except for him. He believed in a clear head. Clear thoughts meant a clear mind and clear decisions.

    Are you Lord Bainbridge?

He turned, startled by the voice. He thought he was alone. He backed up a bit as a Tall Man approached him with a smile. He looked familiar somehow, but he couldn't place where he might have seen him before. He put a hand to his mouth and politely yawned into it. Maybe at the banquet. But then where was the man's carriage?

He looked about, checking, but saw nothing to allay his suspicions. But he was above all else an honorable man and a kind one and to offend a stranger, even if they were a bit too familiar was not in his nature, though caution leaned him towards being careful.

The man stopped several feet from him. He wore a long overcoat of some kind of material that glittered slightly. He wore black boots with bent up toes and it was clear he wore some kind of dress shirt beneath the overcoat with a tie. So, Lord Bainbridge didn't feel frightened. This was no low life scum likely to rob him. Obviously, the man was some kind of performer, maybe an actor from the Royal Academy. He did remember meeting quite a few there the night before. He frowned. Maybe it was there he knew him from.

Again, he was wrong. Made a bad decision.

The man smiled, revealing teeth as sharp as daggers.

Lord Bainbridge was startled once more.

I have an invitation for you.

The tall man reached out a long ticket, which Lord Bainbridge automatically took. He glanced at it, and then frowned. I've never heard of the Gallery of Illusions. No, wait. He spoke in sudden recollection.

He looked at the Tall Man. Your picture was prominent on posters that have been appearing throughout the city.

He stepped a bit closer, not sure yet whether to accept the man on an equal basis, or brush him off because of the hour.

"I'm sure, however, that I know nothing of your Gallery. And I most certainly never met you...uh...? He fished for the Tall Man's name.

The Tall Man sighed unhappily, his face losing its smile momentarily. "I suppose you
