    A Maggie MacKay Holiday Short Story

     

    It's Halloween and Maggie's mother is throwing a haunted house… as in, she's invited all  the ghosts of the neighborhood over for a party.  Unfortunately, one of the ghosts is not in high spirits and, in fact, is wanted by the Other Side's finest.  It is up to Maggie and Killian to find out what caused this soul's unrest and return him to his happy haunting ground.

     

    This is a Maggie MacKay Holiday Short, but can be read no matter where you are in the series.  Book one, Maggie for Hire, is free, so you might want to read that first, though.  This is just an excuse to hang out with some of your favorite characters outside of the main arc.  This story originally appeared in the Nightshade anthology.

Her plays have been produced in New York, Los Angeles, and the Washington, DC/Baltimore area. Danley’s screenplay Fairy Blood won first place in the Breckenridge Festival of Film screenwriting competition in the action/adventure category. Her debut novel, The Woodcutter, was honored with the Garcia Award for the best fiction book of the year, was the first place fantasy book in the Reader Views Literary Awards, and the winner of the sci-fi/fantasy category of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Kate currently lives in Burbank, California, and works by day as office manager for education and exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.

      Chapter One

      I fucking hate Halloween .

      I threw the folder onto my desk and rubbed my temples.

      Killian paused pouring the bag of candy into a bowl and held it out to me.  I hear that chocolate makes the holiday better.

      I took one of the fun-sized bars and then realized that to have any fun, I was going to need about five, so I took a couple more.

      My name is Maggie MacKay.  I live in a world called The Other Side.  It runs parallel to Earth, but I’m pretty darn good at ripping holes through the dimensions and popping over whenever my job requires it.  And my job requires it on a fairly regular basis.  I have the dubious honor of finding the monsters who have overstayed their welcome in Hollywood and returning them to the loving arms of a gentle corrections officer.  By monsters, I don't mean Silver Lake hipsters who refuse anything that's not craft-brewed.  No, I mean werewolves, vampires, ghouls, Hugh Heffner, and various other subsets of the undead.

      So is there any particular reason you hate childhood celebrations and happiness? Killian asked.  Or is this just another one of your endearing qualities?

      I chucked my eraser at Killian’s head.

      Killian is my partner at M&K Tracking.  We share a sweet little office straight out of a noir film.  Brown-bead paneling on the walls, slow ceiling fans circling overhead, even frosted glass in the door so that anybody coming for a consultation could throw a badass silhouette before entering.  Handy when it behooves you to count the tentacles and extra heads before admitting visitors.  There is a greengrocer below us who is happy to give us a
