About this ebook
Jamaluddin Afghani was a thinker, a political activist and an ideologist during the late 19th century. Highly influential in the Muslim world, particularly in the Middle East, South Asia and Europe, he was an advocate of Pan-Islamic unity and Islamic modernism, and his message swept across a multitude of countries like a hurricane. Foreword
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
When reading the life events of the various inspiring personalities in the book Tareekh-e-Islam ki Qabil-e-Fakhr Shakhsiat
, Jamaluddin Afghani stands out very much because of the sheer scope of his work. His message of pan-Islamic unity and the power of an Islamic, democratic revolution swept across the multitude of Muslim countries who were slipping deeper and deeper into the chains of European colonialism, under ineffective, incompetent, or self-interested leaders.
At such a time, a man was born in mid-nineteenth century, in the rather primitive country of Afghanistan. He traveled from Egypt to Turkey to India to Persia with the force and power of a hurricane. The people flocked to him wherever he went, and even political leaders could were drawn to him. His unapologetic, anti-imperialist opinions exiled him from various countries time and time again, but who can take away the dignity of a man whom God Himself has chosen for a task? He tried his utmost to wake up the Muslims from their slumber, and for this, the Muslim Ummah must forever be indebted to him.
Translating this booklet is a small effort to convey his message, his motivational personality, and his passion for Islamic unity to a more global audience.
I would like to thank Naima Sohaib for inspiring me with her reverence for Muslim heroes which is reflected in her writings, and Sohaib Umar for editing this translation. May Allah SWT accept our efforts.

Who was Jamaluddin Afghani?
His name was Jamaluddin, and his titles include the Sage of the East, the Revolutionary, and the Great Mujahid.
He was a descendant of the famous Hadith scholar Syed Ali Tirmidhi, and further back of the Prophet’s grandson Hussain (RA). His ancestors had settled in the city of Asadabad in Afghanistan in 783 CE. His father Syed Safdar was a learned scholar, quite influential and well-known in his social circle. There are not much details about Jamaluddin’s mother Sakina Begum, but she is said to be a religious lady also related to Imam Hussain (RA).
Birth
Jamaluddin was born in the month of Sha’ban 1254 AH (1839 CE) in the city of Asadabad in Afghanistan. There is controversy surrounding his origins, with some historians claiming that he was actually born in Iran and taken to Iraq during his childhood, but others believe that these claims lack authenticity.
Childhood and Early Life
Jamaluddin was a young child when his father was summoned to Kabul by the Afghan government due to political reasons. Syed Safdar’s influence in Asadabad was deemed dangerous by the government, and the summons was an attempt to keep him away from the area. At the age of eight, Jamaluddin’s education began in Kabul. His father was his first teacher. Jamaluddin possessed extraordinary intelligence, and progressed rapidly in his studies of history, religious law,
