About this ebook

“Follow me,” said Christy the next morning, looking around the kitchen. She motioned with one hand which held a small yellow book. “Follow me, Brad,” she repeated.
“Why so mysterious?”
“Shh.” Christy put her finger to her lips. “I don’t want Mom to hear us. Follow me. You said I was keeping something from you yesterday. Well, today I’m going to show you what it is.”
Brad followed Christy down to the basement. “What
are we doing down here?”
“Oh, Brad! Oh, Brad!” said an excited Christy, jumping up and down with her hair bouncing. “I do have a secret! A gigantic secret! I’ve been dying to tell you. I’ve about burst, trying to keep it from you.”
“What secret? Tell me. I’m all ears.” Brad looked around the large room with boxes overflowing everywhere. An old, large, brown couch sat in the middle of the chaos.
“Let’s go to the couch.” She sat down on the right side of the couch. “You sit right here,” she said, pointing to the left side of the couch.
The middle pillow was empty. She was so excited her red hair sparked flames, and her big blue eyes flashed fire.
“What’s going on?” questioned Brad again.
“I want you to meet someone.”
“Who? There’s nobody here but us.” Brad looked around the room. A sudden flash of light appeared.
“That’s where you’re wrong, Brad,” said a small voice beside Brad on the couch.
“Brad, meet Andrew,” said Christy, “our very own live-in Ghost Kid.”
Brad turned as white as snow and jumped to his feet.

The Basement

Christy, who are you talking to? asked her mom. Diane stood at the top of the stairs, calling down to her daughter, who was in the basement. Your voice is very loud. It carries upstairs.

I’m not talking to anyone, Mom. Brad is at his friend Ethan’s house, and I was just hanging out in the basement.

Twelve-year-old Christy, her sixteen-year-old brother, Brad, and their mother, Diane Ramsey all had flaming red hair and big, blue, sparkling eyes.

Christy, Brad and Diane had just moved into a huge, house over 100 years old. The house sat on top of a mountain which sprawled downward to the Pacific Ocean.

The Ramsey’s had moved back from Pennsylvania to La Jolla, California to be closer to Diane’s parents: General Max Mumps, Commander of Fort Cheyenne, and his wife, Frieda.

Christy and Brad’s dad had died in a car crash when Christy was a baby. Brad, being the oldest, had always tried to be a protective big brother for Christy.

I need you to get a screwdriver for me in the garage. The silverware drawer fell apart again. Your dog is barking and driving me crazy. Come and get her! yelled Diane.

Okay, Mom, I’ll be right up.

You were making a lot of noise downstairs, commented Diane, when Christy handed her the screwdriver.

Christy's small, beige-and-white dog Fluffy was of an unknown breed. She had followed Christy home from school one day two years ago, and quickly became a member of the Ramsey family. Christy scooped up Fluffy from the floor. She held her tightly in her arms.

Brad and his friends, Ethan and Mark, walked into the kitchen.

Mom, Ethan and Mark are going to hang out with me in my room and listen to my new CD.

Hi, Mrs. Ramsey! the boys called to Diane.

Hi, guys, she acknowledged. When you’re ready, there are snacks in the kitchen.

Cool, Mom.

Ethan was as tall as Brad, with brown hair and brown eyes. Today, he was wearing jeans and a blue sweater.

Mark was the tallest with blonde hair. His brown-rimmed frames covered green eyes and set on his sharp nose. He was wearing black jeans and a red sweatshirt. Brad was wearing his burgundy-colored jogging suit.

Can I listen, too? inquired Christy, walking up to Brad and his friends.

Not today, said Brad, shutting his bedroom door quickly.

Christy felt like Brad had slammed the door in her face! She walked downstairs once again with Fluffy still in her arms.

After dinner that evening, Brad noticed Christy

was down in the basement again.

What’s going on with Christy, Mom? She keeps hanging around down in that basement. It’s a big mess down there. What's she doing?

She says she’s just hanging out. She could empty some of those packing cartons, if she really wanted something to do.

I’ll tell her. Brad headed for the stairs to the basement. As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he heard voices.

Hey, Kiddo! Brad called, walking into the basement. Christy jumped.

Brad, you scared the living daylights out of me. Why are you sneaking up on me?

I’m not sneaking up on you. It sounded like you were talking to someone, so you didn’t hear me come in. He shook his red head. What’s the attraction down here?

Nothing. I’m just bored. You and your friends hung out all day together. I didn’t have anything to do.

What about your friend Wendy and all your other girlfriends?

I called all of them today. They must have all gone some place together because no one was home. Christy was feeling hurt and left out.

Spring Break will be over soon. It will be back to the old grindstone again.

All that homework. Yuck, said Christy, making a face. Let’s go upstairs. I’m bored with this basement. It’s really yucky, gross down here. I think the families that lived here before us left all their junk.

That’s why I came downstairs. Mom said to start emptying the cartons that got shoved down here when we moved in.

Yeah, tomorrow's another day, muttered Christy, walking slowly up the stairs.

Are you sure you’re telling me everything?

Why yes, Brad, said Christy, looking down at the floor. Her face turned bright red. I’ve told you everything. Why do you ask?

I know you, and I know when you’re keeping something from me. They both walked into the kitchen.

Fluffy had followed them slowly up the basement stairs. When she reached the top, Brad turned and picked her up. He held her high in the air.

You’re a good girl, Fluffy, but you really need to work on your barking. He petted her head and neck, and then put her back on the floor.

Something Spooky

Diane was putting away the clean dishes in the old cupboards when the cupboard door fell off. Next, the drawer she opened fell apart in her hand. Then the microwave oven turned on and off.

Fluffy, who had been sleeping in the kitchen, woke up suddenly, growling deep down in her throat. She took her front paws and batted the air in front of her, while running around in circles barking and yapping.

Christy, come get Fluffy! She’s barking and driving me up the wall, called Diane, standing at the top of the stairs leading to the basement.

Okay, Mom, I’ll be right there.

Could it be because of an electrical short? Diane thought, back in the kitchen and looking at the microwave. This old house has a lot of charm, but it really needs a lot of remodeling.

The phone rang, but when Brad answered it, nobody was there. The doorbell rang, but when he opened the door, nobody was there either. The microwave turned on and off again. Brad was starting to freak out.

Mom, something weird is going on. The phone has gone bonkers, and now the doorbell.

Plus the broken kitchen drawer and the cupboard door, added Diane. We can expect that from old wood, but something is going haywire with our electricity. I’ll let Scott look at it tomorrow.

Scott Honeycutt, Diane’s fiancé, was a Lieutenant in the Army. She had met him the previous year when she was visiting her parents. He was a tall man with blond hair and laughing, green eyes. His arms bulged with muscles from working out.

Diane was washing dishes at the sink when she cried out, Brad, help! Help! I’m drowning.

What’s the matter, Mom? he asked, walking into the kitchen.

Can’t you see? The sink looks like Niagara Falls. Something broke! Diane exclaimed, motioning with her arms. Water was gushing everywhere.

Brad dashed outside and shut off the main water valve. The water instantly stopped. He ran down to the basement and returned with a wrench to fix the plumbing. This would be a simple job, Brad thought.

When Brad opened the bottom cupboard door under the sink, he was flabbergasted. The pipe was split in half. Mom, look at this pipe! Somebody sawed it in half.

Brad, we are the only people in this house, except Christy. She’s been in the basement all evening.

We didn’t saw the pipe in half. Christy didn’t saw the pipe in half. She looked at him with confusion and fright in her eyes.

Mom, I need some money. I have to go to the store and get an elbow. That’s the name of the part I need.

Brad? she asked. "Do you really think you
