CHAPTER ONE
Home is where you feel protected and loved. Home is where the bad guys and the troubles can't find you. These were the thoughts that bubbled to the surface of Donathan's mind as the smell of dying embers and the biting chill of the morning air woke him from his night's rest.
It was a smell that he had been growing accustomed to as he and his girlfriend Sarah made their way back to their hometown after an earthquake had stranded them in St. Louis. The two of them had taken a weekend road trip to get a change of scenery and do the fun things that couples do when they're out of town. Having a cataclysmic earthquake hit them a few months back destroying everything had not been on the itinerary.
Donathan could still hear the cries of the hurt or dying playing over and over in his mind. The concert of screams was accompanied by the sound of crumbling stone and twisted metal. Donathan squeezed his eyes shut while he shook his head to rid himself of those awful memories.
They hadn't been walking two days when they had stumbled onto another group of hikers being attacked by a band of men on motorcycles.
The bikers had played with the unfortunate travelers like cats with mice before shooting the men and carrying the women off to god knows where. That's when Donathan knew that laws would not save them out here. The only laws that mattered now were Darwinian.
Settling back on his haunches Donathan surveyed the campsite. The ground was fairly flat and covered in tall wild grass that was yellowing with the onset of cold weather. They had built a modest campfire with a makeshift spit that they had used to roast the rabbits he had managed to kill hunting last night.
On one side, facing the highway, was a small hill. About fifty feet behind the hill was a titan of an oak tree. Donathan had picked this spot so that the hill and the tree would help to block the light of their fire in an attempt to keep them from being murdered in their sleep.
Donathan stood up and stretched his 6'2" frame. He grunted as he reached the apex of his stretch before he slumped forward. He pulled his jeans up and tugged his dusty green windbreaker down before he finally set off to start his day.
Today wouldn't be any different than any of the rest since the day they had left the relative safety of the city. First, he grabbed the two Smith and Wesson 1911's from under his pillow and stashed them in his waist. After that he proceeded to roll up his down filled, olive green, sleeping bag before he attached it to his charcoal colored backpack. Making his way over to the campfire he pulled their supper from last night out of a plastic bag before he placed it over the dying embers to warm it up. Lastly, he walked over to where Sarah was sleeping so he could wake her up.
As he walked intently over to where Sarah was sleeping, he can't help but feel a pang of regret creep into his heart. Sarah hadn't slept next to him since the end of the first week of their journey. She'd never told him why. She'd just stopped. It hurt him not to be close to her like that anymore, but he couldn't bring himself to ask her why.
The way she treated him now made him wonder if she had ever actually loved him in the first place. Perhaps she had just enjoyed the stability that he provided through his job. Now that none of that mattered maybe she didn't want to be around him anymore.
Thoughts like that made him angry. Knowing that he cared for Sarah as much as he did and not knowing if she felt the same was like having his guts scooped out with a soup spoon. Donathan was angry about wasting time thinking about his feelings. Doing that took him away from his ability to concentrate on keeping them safe. Lord knew they had seen more than one unspeakable act committed by one person on another since they'd set out. Her safety was the only thing he felt comfortable spending his energy on. Wondering if she still loved him was just going to have to wait.
Donathan shook his head to rid himself of those thoughts as he stopped at the foot of Sarah's sleeping bag. He took a minute to watch her sleep. Donathan couldn't help but smile at how peaceful she looked while sleeping with her identical olive green sleeping blanket tucked up under
