About this ebook

Logan is just trying to get by...

After being Lindsay Ryder's assistant, Logan isn't really all that impressed anymore by the Hollywood celebrities he meets during the course of his job.
That is, until he meets the gorgeous Kyler Thomas in person. Who knew someone could actually look like that?
And there's something in his eyes when he looks at Logan, even though he's being set up with Lindsay...is it possible he could be...interested?

Kyler is blindsided by Logan...

Kyler hasn't been this attracted to anyone in...he doesn't even know.
But things start to get a little complicated as he reads one of Logan's scripts and realizes he wants it for his production company. And it might be a cliché, but business and pleasure really don't go well together.
Not to mention the small matter of the furry secret he's keeping...

This book was poorly written with very little substance. My 15 year old daughter writes better novels than this.

Chapter 1

Kyler

I don't know Scottie.

I put the phone on speaker and set it down on the dresser while I buttoned my shirt.

Look, man. People are starting to talk. And not in a good way.

So let them.

I pulled out a tie at random. Cyn, my stylist, made sure that anything in my closet pretty much went with everything else.

Maybe it didn't lead to the most interesting style choices, but at least I knew I couldn't mess up too badly.

Scottie sighed gustily at the other end of the line.

A large part of the reason you get roles is because all the girls want you. I'm not saying you have to get into a relationship. Just...go on a few dates that will get noticed. That's it. It'll be good for your career, good for the lady's career, your fans have something to talk about- there are no losers in that situation.

I can think of one, I said wryly, shrugging into my jacket.

Kid, this is how the game is played. Hollywood is anything but real. Trust me- I've been around the block enough to know it's basically all bullshit.

I sat down on the edge of the bed, staring at myself in the mirror.

I still don't think it's a good idea.

I hear you. I really do. Just do this one time. Lindsay Ryder's expecting you to pick her up in a half hour.

I sighed, scrubbing at my face with one hand.

You already set up a date?

Just one, Scottie said briskly, the tone he always used when he knew I'd be mad and didn't want to give me an opening in which to go in on him. You're going to the premiere anyway, you're just taking someone to be photographed with. Probably make the red carpet less awkward.

Right. I'm sure having someone I don't know on my arm will make it a real party, I said sarcastically.

Come on, he wheedled. We both know you're too nice of a guy to leave her hanging now. I'm texting you her address.

I hung up, too irritated to say goodbye.

Scottie was an excellent publicist.

I just wish he was an equally good friend.

Or hell, human being.

I checked the incoming text.

At least she didn't live too far away.

Knowing I'd been manipulated into a situation I didn't want to be in didn't stop it from happening. I could refuse to go. But Scottie was right- I'd feel too bad about standing her up later.

I usually preferred to drive myself, but parking was always a mess at these things.

Ronald was waiting with the car out front when I came down.

Change of plans, Ronald. We're going to this address first.

I read it off as I sat down in the back and he nodded.

No problem.

I didn't expect there to be. Ronald new the city like the back of his hand. I'd never even seen him use the GPS to get anywhere.

Sometimes it was a little spooky.

I sat back and let my mind drift as Ronald pulled out of the drive and through the gate.

The fact that I was even going to a movie premiere would have shocked me just a few years ago, when I'd come to California with a dream and a total of five dollars in my pocket.

Looking back, I had no idea how my parents had supported my decision to do so. It was foolhardy at best, bordering on delusional at worst.

But I'd done it.

Within a year, I'd booked my first job. A small part on a soap opera that got my feet wet.

That small part became a recurring role, and then turned into a few more guest spots on some other shows.

And then I got what I now knew was my big break.

It wasn't a movie, as I'd imagined as a kid, but a show created by one of the cable channels that grew bigger than anyone could have expected. So big that I felt as if my world changed overnight, the day after the first episode aired.

I went from almost complete anonymity to running from crowds of people and paparazzi in the span of a few hours.

I still couldn't believe how quick and complete the change was.

Now, after a few movies that performed well at the box office, my career was way beyond what I could have imagined or predicted.

And I found, as cliché as it sounded, there wasn't a lot up here.

Sure, the money was nice. I didn't have to worry about working another job while trying to catch auditions anymore.

And I loved the work just as much as I always had.

But it came along with a level of public scrutiny that nobody could really be prepared for.

When I'd ignored my pack's worries about becoming too exposed, I honestly hadn't thought I would ever be so public.

I never spoke about my personal romantic life, because, frankly, it was nobody's business but mine. I couldn't control everyone else, but I could damn well decide what I myself would and wouldn't speak about.

It would have been the same if I was straight. At least, it would have been for me.

But I knew the people who decided things in the business would hesitate casting me in certain roles if they thought my personal life would lose them some portion of the audience, which ultimately meant some portion of their profit.

Still, I refused to hide who I was.

If I wanted to go out with a guy, I did. The fact that we didn't go out to very public hot spots was more because I wasn't going there to begin with rather than that I was hiding what I was doing.

I would have thought this would mean less stress for my publicist. There were never any messes to clean up or stories to twist to make me look good.

And it had seemed fine early on.

But Scottie had started making noises about the fact that I always showed up to events either alone or with my mother when she wanted to come. He still hadn't out and out asked me what was going on, but this thing with Lindsay was just the latest attempt he'd made to tweak the public's impression of me.

If only he knew what else I was hiding, he'd have probably have a literal heart attack.

I'd go this one time because I had no desire to be rude.

But Scottie and I were going to have to have a serious talk after this was over.

Logan

Are you sure? Maybe I should wear the black one. It shows off my cleavage more.

This one is good. You look classy and understated, I repeated patiently.

Lindsay turned in front of the floor length mirror once more, her stylist watching anxiously from the background.

I didn't envy the poor woman.

Lindsay was a lot to deal with on a normal day.

But she was a needy mess on event days, her constant need for reassurance more than a little draining.

But I didn't mind too much.

I'd known her since before we'd both gone away to college, me to pursue a writing career and her to pursue a career in acting.

She'd dropped out when she'd landed her first big role.

I'd finished and had gotten some work here and there, but I was still trying to break into the industry.

She'd been kind enough to hire me as her assistant, insisting that she'd help me get my work sold.

It hadn't happened yet, but I kept working hard and creating in the meantime.

I knew my stuff was viable, had the potential to be commercially successful. But I needed a break, something I hadn't gotten yet.

Which was why I was still calming Lindsay's nerves down as she got ready to go to a premiere with Hollywood-It-Boy Kyler Thomas.

I pictured the guy- a couple of inches over six feet, jet black hair that he kept a little longer on top, icy blue husky eyes.

And a face that was made for the screen.

All hard angles and hollows, he had the kind of uber-masculine face that just said man. And when he smiled that movie star smile, his dimples peeked out.

As if he didn't already have enough going for him.

And he could act. People had been quick to dismiss his abilities, but he'd shown he could be on screen with the heavy weights in the period drama he was last in.

With the extra level of neurosis Lindsay was showing tonight, I got the feeling she was more than ready to bag the poor guy.

He probably didn't have a chance. I'd seen men young and old fall victim to the sultry seductress routine she so readily adopted when she decided she needed it.

At least I wouldn't have to keep her entertained tonight. I'd still have to go in case she needed something, but I wouldn't have to be the arm she hung on to all night.

I gave myself a mental slap.

All this bitching about her was uncalled for. She was helping me out with this job and I was being ungrateful, even if only in my own mind.

Resolved to think positively, I started in on another line of reassurances when the bell rang.

Oh my God, that's him! Quick, Logan, get the door! I'm going to pull on the black one.

Not arguing with her, I left her bedroom and started for the door.

Security should have alerted us before letting him in.
