Mr. Asle Helgelein machte sich ernsthaft Sorgen. Sein Bruder Andrew war vor mehr als fünf Monaten abgereist, nachdem er sich seinen Anteil an der gemeinsam bewirtschafteten Farm von ihm hatte ablösen lassen. Immerhin hatte es sich um einen Betrag von 3000 Dollar gehandelt. Da eine solche Summe damals ein kleines Vermögen darstellte, war die Beschaffung des Geldes nicht ohne Schwierigkeiten möglich gewesen.
Begonnen hatte alles mit einer Annonce in der Chicagoer Zeitung »The Skandinaven«, die vor allem von Emigranten aus Nordeuropa gelesen wurde: »Reiche, junge Witwe, Besitzerin einer großen Farm, möchte mit einem Gentleman bekannt werden, der kultiviert und ebenfalls nicht ohne Vermögen ist. Heirat erwünscht.« Asle war die Sache von Anfang an nicht geheuer gewesen, doch Andrew hatte »nur einmal so« auf das Inserat geantwortet, woraus sich binnen kurzer Zeit eine rege Korrespondenz entwickelt hatte.
Die Witwe beschrieb sich selbst als »gute Norwegerin«, die sich einen treusorgenden, guten Gatten wünschte – und einen Mitbesitzer für ihre Farm, »die wohl schönste in ganz Indiana«. Bald darauf rückte sie auch mit ihren monetären Vorstellungen heraus, für die sie äußerst präzise Anweisungen vorbereitet hatte: »Schicke kein Bargeld über die Bank. Banken kann man heutzutage nicht trauen. Wechsle alles Bargeld, das du besitzt, in Noten mit dem höchsten Wert, den du bekommen kannst. Nähe die Banknoten dann so fest wie möglich in deine Unterwäsche ein und sage niemandem etwas davon, keinem Freund und auch keinem Verwandten. Es soll ein Geheimnis zwischen uns sein – und es wird sicherlich nicht unser einziges Geheimnis bleiben
