Chapter 1
Justin was naked. Or at least he felt naked as he stood at the head of the conference room, which was filled with executives. All he could see was an ocean full of suit ties and greasy hair. He took a deep breath. There wasn’t even a podium between him and all of the stuffy executives. Vulnerable wasn’t even close to describing how exposed he felt.
... Thank you,
he concluded. Are there any questions before I hand the laser pointer back to Miss Hutchinson?
The room was silent. He was sure that everyone could hear his heart beating faster by the minute. While he was glad not to have to answer any questions, he couldn’t help but feel as if he might have just blown the biggest presentation of his life. He took another deep breath and exhaled slowly. Only one more minute until I’m home free. I would like to thank you all for your time.
He took a step away from the projection screen and handed the small laser pointer back to his boss, Valerie Hutchinson.
Her blonde hair was pulled back in a tight bun. She wore a power suit that made him think that she had bigger family jewels than he did. Of course, she wore hers in her ears, in the form of two pear-shaped diamond earrings that were a little too inappropriate for work – not that anyone had the guts to tell her so. Valerie Hutchinson was intimidation incarnate. Valerie Hutchinson was the friendliest face in the room. As she stood up, she locked eyes with him and flashed a quick smile at him. Justin could feel his shoulders relax. Maybe it was the fact that she was so frightening that made it feel that much better whenever he garnered her praise or admiration.
Thank you, Mr. Atkinson. That was a wonderful presentation. I look forward to hearing more about this project as the lab drones down in the basement finish each benchmark – which is clearly outlined in your packets,
she said. She motioned toward the folders sitting in front of each of the men.
Justin glanced over the crowd, who seemed to have softened since her glowing review. They nodded and smiled, muttering some nice words that he couldn’t hear. He was still readjusting and destressing after his stint in front of the room. It still sounded like he was in the bottom of the ocean as the blood rushed through his ears.
