    Chapter 1

Texas Ranger Zach Davis sat in shock. He had discovered the identity of the Vengador.

How did I miss that? In all the time we’ve spent together I never once suspected...

Perhaps that was the problem. Zach was too close to the case. He knew that this was sometimes an issue with other rangers. For whatever reason personal feelings crept their way into the case making them unable to see the clues that were right under their nose. Until now Zach had never experienced this problem.

Probably because I’ve never given a damn about anyone until now.

Of course, he had no proof that Hannah Meyers was the Vengador. At least, nothing that would hold up before a judge. But her note had been enough for him. Deep down, he knew the truth. And the truth was that he had a hard decision to make.

Hannah broke the law. She might have even killed Sanchez too.

This thought did not sit well with Zach. Granted, Hannah had never been especially liberal with sharing personal details. But he thought he knew her well enough to accurately judge her character.

You’re a damned hypocrite is what you are.

Zach had killed so many men he had lost track of the number and he was upset that Hannah might have killed one. He rationalized that the lives he had taken had always been in the line of duty. But yet again he was starting to question where that line was. His duty was to uphold the law, arrest Hannah and allow Harry Marsden to continue his technically legal business.

She might have killed more. You just don’t know about it. She could be capable of anything.

Zach absently examined a crack in the hotel’s wall, trying to put the pieces together. Even though the evidence suggested otherwise he just couldn’t wrap his head around Hannah Meyers ruthlessly murdering a man for her own gain. He remembered the way she had noticed the corruption that took place in the railway construction sites. She was a practical survivalist but she was not a bad person.

Besides, what reason would she have to kill her father’s foreman?

Things weren’t adding up. In a situation like this there was only one thing left for Zach to do: take a bath. He was covered in the dust of travel and taking a soak always managed to clear his head.

    Maybe then I’ll get
