    LEFT ON THE BEACH

    LEFT ON THE BEACH

Squeaky Doo is my name. My beloved owner Marge gave me that name. I am a Teddy Bear.  I am eleven inches in height, and I am brown. Marge says I am very handsome. She takes me most places with her because she loves me.

One day, Marge took me along to the beach with her parents and grandparents. When she went into the sea for a swim with all of the others, she kissed me and left me on the bench on the shore. She said, Squeaky Doo, you cannot swim. Stay here where you will not get wet. I love you. I will be right back. I sat patiently waiting for my beloved Marge to return, but she did not.

A long time passed, and I thought Marge and her family were having such a good time they were staying longer than they usually would. I suddenly heard screams and the sounds of sirens.

I saw men dressed in white rush to the sea to pick up my Marge. She was not breathing. I sensed that something terrible had happened to her. Her parents, grandparents, and brother were crying. I saw the ambulance drive away.  No one came to get me.

It was dark and raining. I heard voices in the distance. The voices came closer and closer. The voices belonged to a couple of big boys. They were talking and laughing loudly. One of them saw me on the bench. He picked me up and said, What is this toy bear doing here all alone? Maybe a silly child forgot his toy. As he said that, he flung me into the ocean. Boy did that hurt!

A massive wave threw me up into the air, and I landed on the rocks. I remained on the rocks for days. It rained a lot during those days. I got soaked completely.

I remembered Marge telling me she did not want me to get wet when she went for her swim.

Oh, how I missed her and her hugs and kisses. Marge took me everywhere. Would I ever see my Marge again?

At that time, people turned up to clear the beach of rubble.

One of the workers spotted me. He picked me up and looked at me. I thought for a moment he was thinking of taking me to his home.

Instead, he put me on a coconut tree trunk and said, The sun ought to dry you out, and you will look as good as new again.

He walked away. Later that night, a large branch from the tree fell and covered me.

    LONELY NIGHTS

I SPENT MANY LONELY nights under the tree branch.

None of the children who came to the beach noticed me because I remained hidden under that branch.

Days passed, and I gave up hope of anyone finding me. Then one day I heard voices again
