The Dungeons
She was somewhere the daylight never visited.
Outside, the wind protested against the stone walled profanity she inhabited.
In the corner a gaunt desk strained under papers and books, illuminated by a brave little candle.
Notes were scrawled, diagrams drawn, searching for the answer to the only question that mattered.
Yet still no clues, and so tired.
She moved away from the desk, sinking into the shadow. She came to a wall and her fingertips traced its cold, unforgiving form.
She drew shallow breaths in preparation.
Then she struck out with a fist clenched in anger.
Heat crept up her arm as if it was submerging into boiling water, and she screamed until she was hoarse.
Blood dripped from her knuckles.
But slowly focus returned like blood forcing back into thawing fingers.
Better.
She returned to the little star, to the books, and began again.
Eva woke up gasping, sweaty.
Nightmares again.
Goldie nuzzled into her armpit delicately as she slowly prised her eyes open. They stung from all the crying these last few days. Waking had become just a doorway between one pain and another.
She looked at Goldie. The friendly felion had changed markedly in the time since the party. Whereas before he had guzzled all varieties of food down by the tray load and never been satisfied, now she could hardly persuade him to help her with a single slice of bread. He had lost weight, she was sure.
His demeanour seemed to have softened somehow as well. In the days leading up to the feast he had been energetic and lively, butting into her each morning when they had heard Silverstone leaving his room, and sometimes almost knocking her over as he collided with her legs when demanding a stroke.
But since that night he had become subdued, gentler. As if he understood, somehow, that she was fragile, and was now patting her instead of the other way around. Sometimes she thought that perhaps he sensed what had taken place, and was just as saddened by what had happened.
Eva hadn't been brave enough to open her door any of those times she’d heard Silverstone outside, in spite of Goldie’s pressure.
Was she so afraid of his powers?
Or was it the fear of witnessing her friend changed, of seeing his suffering, and being powerless to help him?
Every morning and night, as she'd heard the light footsteps in the corridor, she had remained still. But while her body lay unmoving, something had stirred from within it. A part of her spirit perhaps, detaching itself from her imprisoned body and reaching for her friend just beyond the thin wooden door. Sensing his suffering. Enclosing him, like a blanket of her presence.
Each time she had found the figure grown colder, and while she imparted warmth she felt something exchanged in return. Something perceived, but which she could not yet define.
She remembered the night of the party again. It had been the last time she had seen Silverstone. There had been an explosion of violence, culminating with Evander's spells crushing the assassins simply, like a cavejaw might deal with a flock of silverfowl daring to pester it.
Silverstone had been beside him. He had helped him.
She had seen battles, and fought with the Peregrine against many outlaw attacks. Each time the Peregrine would fight their enemies off, under the leadership of Liam, and the guidance of Alder. In each conflict there was the threat of defeat, but also the chance of victory, because their enemies were men. Skilled fighters it could be said, but men nonetheless, who wielded no more than swords, and bled when cut. Even when the Peregrine suffered their worst assaults, there was always a way back; a hope that they would rebuild, and learn to defend themselves better next time.
But Evander was no man. He didn't carry a sword, or a bow, or a shield. He wore a cape, and destroyed small armies of attackers with his mere words.
What hope was there against that kind of power?
If a mage wanted the Peregrine people gone, there was nothing that she, Liam, Alder, or anyone else could do to prevent it.
And a war was coming in which that might just happen.
The only defence would come from another mage; only magic could battle magic.
She felt
