    Swerlie-Wherlie’s New Friend

    Cockie the cockerel began his morning song right on time. The Sun had just begun to creep up over the tall trees at the far end of Farmer Blox’s cornfield.

    After a full year of practising his morning chorus, he was ready to give it his best.

    Cock-a-doodle–Dooo! Cock-a-doodle-Dooo!

    Cock-a-doodle-Dooo! Cock-a-doodle-Dooo!

    ‘Not now please, not now.‘

    A small voice whispered tiredly from under a pile of straw, which lay piled up in one corner of the sty-pen.

    Swerlie-Wherlie covered his large ears with his little front trotters. It was no use.
