The World Cup - Gill Schor

    URUGUAY

    2014

    GERMANY

    4th Time Champions

Brazil hosted the 2014 World Cup, the 20th tournament since the international games were first inaugurated in 1930.Thirty two national teams participated in the event with defending champions Spain getting knocked out in the initial round along with Italy and England. Bosnia and Herzegovina made their World Cup debut, while Belgium and Russia returned after a twelve-year absence. Colombia, having last played at the Cup in 1998, displayed their skills by advancing to the Quarter-Finals with the help of star midfielder, James Rodriguez, who received the Golden Boot Award for scoring 6 goals during the month-long competition.

Germany’s low scoring victories in the tournament exploded in the Semi-Finals as the European powerhouse crushed Brazil 7-1, delivering the South American national team their worst blow ever. German striker Miroslav Klosescored the 16th goal of his four World Cup appearances, surpassing the record of 15 goal she had previously shared with Brazil’s Ronaldo. At the Final, Germany faced Argentina and their Captain, Lionel Messi, arguably the world’s best player. The game went into extra time with the only score coming at the 113th minute from the unlikely 19-year old midfielder, Mario Gotze, who took a left cross against his chest to kick in the winning goal. Germany raised their fourth World Cup trophy, tying Italy at second place behind Brazil for the most Cup championships.
