Dedications I’d like to dedicate this book to my very own protector. My Dad, who protected me, is my number one guardian, and now he gets to be my angel. My husband, who now has the job of protecting me, which was passed down to him from my dad. I could never thank you both enough. I also like to dedicate this book to my two beautiful children that God has given me and entrusted me to guide, love, and protect them.

    Chapter One

    James

After regaining consciousness from the attack in my cell, I am on high alert. I have a horrendous headache, and I am having trouble regaining my eyesight. I’m seeing blurred images. My wolf is itching to surface and punish the person who attacked me. Unfortunately, the culprit is still a mystery to me, because I still don’t have any clues as to who it could have been. It could have been any number of people around here.

I am startled by the appearance of Bethany because I am lost in my thoughts of Sadie and the predicament I’ve found myself in. I can’t help but worry she’s discovered how Emmaline and I were communicating, but I can hope for the best. I don’t dare ask her for the simple fact that if she doesn’t know I would be telling her myself. I will just have to wait for her to reveal what she knows. She’s the last person I want to speak to at this moment, but I don’t have much of a choice in the situation I am in. Unfortunately, I am at the mercy of my captors. I would love nothing more than to be with Sadie.

My body is on fire, and I’m in pure agony. I can sense Emmaline’s fear and it seems to me she is in danger or is having discomfort. I want to be with Sadie. When is this catastrophic mess going to end? I wish I could turn back the time and be an ordinary teenager. I would ask Sadie out on a date and hopefully we would fall in love, date for a while, get married, and eventually have a family. Our newly found status and abilities have taken any sort of semblance of normality from us. I resent it on one hand, but I know it’s our destiny. Will we be granted a normal, carefree, human-like life once this situation is resolved? I want a life with Sadie, but am I fooling myself into thinking we can have one. My thoughts are interrupted before I can contemplate any further.

James, how are the accommodations? Bethany asks sarcastically.

I refuse to play her game. I couldn’t ask for anything better, I say deadpan.

You’re not very talkative, are you?

I hate to admit it, but yes, my social skills are lacking. It could be the fact that I don’t care much for your company, though, I retort.

Touché, she says back to me.

There is a problem here. I didn’t kidnap you, so I must have been an appealing candidate for captivity or I wouldn’t be here, correct? I ask her, and I know I am pushing all the right buttons.

I wouldn’t say appealing, per se, but you are an end to a means. You see, we need Emmaline, and what better way to get her back in our hands than to kidnap her protector and one of her best friends. Not to mention, we have two factors going for us. Sadie is in love with you. Love can make you do all sorts of things you wouldn’t normally do. We are counting on her to give up everything to rescue you, she explains.

That’s not going to happen, I say, and I know I don’t sound convincing because I am not convinced myself. I know Sadie is stubborn, and she’d do anything for her friends. If she loves me, then she’ll try ten times harder to accomplish my rescue mission. There’s only one problem, though. Bethany doesn’t need to know I agree with her.

I disagree, but enough with the chit chat. I’ve come to give you something to drink. Let me just say, you don’t have a choice whether to drink it or not, before we get into the dreaded discussion of you refusing to do as you’re told. You will drink the potion, even if we have to use force. What will it be James? Will you choose the easy way or the hard way? she asks as she retrieves a vial of liquid from her pocket.

I mull over my options and decide there’s no use in fighting her. I might as well do as I am told until I can figure a way out of this mess. I will do as you ask of me, but I have a stipulation, I say.

I really don’t think you are in the position to make demands. This isn’t a negotiation, she answers.

I’m just asking for a notebook and pen. I want to journal my days here, so Sadie will have something to remember me by, I say holding my breath.

It’s a sneaky way to find out if Bethany knows anything about Emmaline and me. I need a notebook and pen, so I can communicate with her. It’s the only way to know what they are planning on doing. I watch Bethany’s face for any sign of her knowing Em’s and my secret. I don’t see any recognition. I glance around my cell, and I find I’ve been moved. Why hadn’t I noticed that when I woke up? They must have knocked me out to move me. This fact gives me hope that I may get my request. I glance up at her pleadingly.

Oh, alright, I will get you a notebook and pen. You have to promise me, you’ll do as you’re told, she says.

I will, I readily agree to her terms. I am more than hopeful. If I can keep in contact with Emmaline, maybe this will turn out differently than it did before. Am I getting my hopes up? Probably, but am I going to let this stop me? No, I’m definitely not.

Now, we’ve gotten this cleared up, I need you to drink two different potions, Bethany explains as she slides both vials through the bars.

I take them from her politely. May I ask what they’re for? I am a little fearful of the potion, as I should be. I know I have no choice but to drink it. I just want to know what I am putting in my body.

The red liquid is a potion to disallow you changing into your wolf form. It will be given to you every four hours until we have Emmaline safely back with us. The blue one is to make you weak. We don’t want you to be able to pull the bars up from the floor or bend them. You do understand, correct? she asks sweetly.

I bite my tongue to keep from making a sarcastic comment. Yes, I understand. I open the lid to the vial with the red liquid and drain its contents in one big gulp. It tastes terrible, like rotten eggs. I gag, but I take a deep breath and swallow a few times in an attempt to keep myself from expelling the vile liquid.

If you vomit, we’ll have to inject you with it, she says nonchalantly.

I think I’m alright, I say as I open the second vial. I pray this one doesn’t taste as bad. If it does, I don’t think I will be able to hold back the vomit.

This one taste like cotton candy, so it should be much better, she says, tapping her fingers on the metal door as if she is bored.

Awesome, it’ll be like I’m at a carnival, I say jokingly but in a sarcastic manner. I open the vial, and quickly drink the contents. It does taste a lot better than the last. I thank God for small favors.

If only we had amusement rides, huh? she asks.

I can almost hear a slight joking tone to her voice. Does she actually have a heart? If she does, we haven’t been a witness to it, yet. I do as I’m told because I am hoping she’ll leave me alone for a few minutes. I want her to get me the things I need to communicate with Emmaline, because I need to know if Sadie is safe. When I get back to fae realm, there’s some elven heads going to roll. How could someone betray their own kind? I would like to speak to my father about this matter. I know my Gram has to be beside herself with worry about me.

Rest up … we have a plan to get Emmaline back. We need you to be well, she says as she strolls away.

I look around the room then I remember she is supposed to bring me supplies. Bethany, I say to see if she is still within ear shot.

    Yes?

Will the things I ask for be brought to me?

Yes, I have sent for them.

    Thank you.

She doesn’t respond, but I can sense the kindness I am showing her throws her off her game. She’s not used to anyone treating her with respect. I am hoping this will go a long way in getting me what I want from her.

A man, I’ve never seen before, enters the room. He doesn’t look particularly happy to be here, but he is holding a notebook and pen. I am eager to have these in my cell. I am itching to begin writing to Emmaline. He is taking his time, strolling to my cage leisurely as if to spark some kind of emotion within me. I ignore his attempts and continue to sit quietly, which tests all restraint I have. He finally makes it to me.

Writing a pen pal, are we? he says with a smirk.

Again, two can play this game.

Why yes, I am. I figured if I had to be stuck here with you guys for a while I might as well catch up with my pen pal in China. She must be worried, because I haven’t contacted her since this mess started, I say with a smile.

You’re a funny one for sure. I think I know exactly who you’ll be writing. A certain, pretty little red head, would be who I’d pick. Feisty, that one is. She has a lot of spark in her. I’d love to make her mine, and I would show her how a real man treats a lady, he says as he continues to goad me into a reaction.

I didn’t catch your name, I say politely.

It’s Kaleb. You haven’t met my pal Jasper, yet. Or have you?

    "Kaleb,
