About this ebook

When a dangerous situation forces 18-year-old Maria to leave her Boston home, she’s swept away to Scotland as part of the Witness Protection Program. ?In a strange land with a new name, Maria hides out as an au pair at the mysterious Harley Estate. Already known as an “over-feeler”—and paranoid for good reason—Maria is spooked by the odd behavior of the Harley residents: from the eccentric kids in her care, to the miserly nurse with the sheet-white skin, to the attractive yet broody eldest son, Jonathan. As the days pass, the vanishing portraits, the cloaked figures and the disembodied humming in the dead of night could perhaps be explained away, but it’s the discovery of Harley’s macabre and deadly family history that confirms Maria’s growing fears and suspicions may be more than just nerves; she may have fallen into something even more horrifying and threatening than what she left behind—something not even of this world.

The theme of this thriller could easily be secrets and how dangerous they can be. Every character featured in Those We Fear is hiding something. Maria, the 18 year old main character, recently placed under witness protection, takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy Scottish family. Assuming that rural Scotland will be a peaceful and safe place to hide until she can testify against her mother's murderer, Maria is unprepared for the odd goings on she encounters at the Harley Estate. This story is full of twists and turns, ghostly encounters and a little romance. The story never lacked for action and was certainly not boring. My only real complaint was that the story had a few too many twists and by the end it was difficult to take any of the characters seriously. I liked the addition of the ghostly element and the characters were likeable. All in all I would classify this as a good read but not a great one. This review is based on a copy of the book I received from the publisher via the Early Reviewer program.

So this was a short, fun read. The tension and pacing definitely kept me awake and the pages turning! I particularly enjoyed it for seeing how the author kept things happening, setting the pace high and never letting it slack. The setting was great, too; in isolated Scotland with all the mists and mysteries that go along with it. The main character, Maria, was well drawn and definitely going through something terrible, which became clearer as the story unfolded (though admittedly the truth about what happened to her mother felt off to me). The story itself reminded me the most of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, with a heathy sprinkling of Jane Eyre tossed in as well. Overall, a fun read with a refreshingly realistic ending that I appreciated. If you're looking for something a little dark, a little suspenseful, and definitely a little creepy, check this one out!

This story had a good mystery. Seems kind of paranormal/gothic. There are some interesting characters. It seems like YA, but there were a few scenes that made me hesitate to let my teen daughter read. So it's best for very older teens.Received this book from LibraryThing.com for review.

I really enjoy books that pull you into the plot from the start and fill in the other bits of the story as you read. The characters were unique and interesting to learn about. I like the various threads that were woven into the book along with the primary plot thread. The suspicion and other-worldly elements added to the feel of the read. There seems to be a bit too much effort into keeping the guessers from predicting anything which makes for a bit of a winding type of read. A few less switches and twisting turns and the book would easily earn another star. There is rarely a moment where there isn't something going on. Overall this is a good read and certainly something many readers will enjoy. I received an ARC through library thing in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

This book was alright. I was interested in the description of the book so I was looking forward to reading it. However for the first part of the book, I felt like I was reading a modern remake of Jane Eyre (or something similar). It was trying to evoke that type of feeling, which it did, but I started getting annoyed with that mood in a modern tale. Once the story got into its mystery it got away from that a little, or I just got used to the writing style. It had some good twists and turns with the mystery and the overall tale was good. I'm not sure I liked the way a character was depicted in the end as I think its not exactly an accurate depiction of a specific 'issue' (and I'm trying to say all this without giving spoilers). However, I think some young adults would enjoy this book. As an adult, it was an OK read.Received ARC copy for review via Librarything.com Early Reviewer giveaways. (3 Stars)

When I started this book, I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into. The description touched on a thriller/suspense/paranormal combo and I was mostly curious how a ghost might fit in.

If there's anything about a book that will draw me in is a sense of simple curiosity.

Those We Fear is the story of a girl in the witness protection program. For much of the story we don't know how or why she has found herself in this position, but we are told that she has chosen to become a nanny at a Lord's estate.

    What could go wrong, right?

Before she can even get accustomed to her new life, some unsettling discoveries and happenings begin to occur. Left with the question of whether she has made the right choice, she is forced to protect both herself and the children within her care.

This is my first real exposure to paranormal fiction, so I don't have much to compare it to. Was it creepy? Ehhhh. Did it add a sense of eeriness to the feel? Definitely. I was afraid it might be cheesy and was pleasantly surprised. I might be willing to give the paranormal genre more of a chance after this.

My Rating: I really enjoyed this book and thought it was a great easy weekend read. It was a bit creepier than my usual reads so it was a good change of speed for me personally. However, it isn't something I'll consider a favorite. Do I recommend it still? Absolutely!

Who should read it?: If you've looked at the paranormal genre and thought about giving it a try, I think this is the perfect introduction.

Those We Fear by Victoria GriffithIt’s not very often that I get to read a standalone book. Most of the time, I pick up a novel that I think is a standalone then find out there is a second book when I finish it. The author, Victoria Griffith, dove right into the book. There was no stage setting in the first chapter except that the main character is a part of the Witness Protection Program. The author, at this point, does not indicate why she is a part of the WPP but does indicate that whatever happened to Maria, the main character, was enough to make Maria jump at every little thing. As the book went on, I became more and more interested in it. I never knew what to expect. I didn’t know whether to think that what was going on was just a person messing with Maria or if the supernatural was involved. Once the author reveals what is really going on, I was shocked. I looked back on everything I read and would have never guessed it. This book is unlike the rest of the books I read. Most are filled with adventure and romance. Although this book doesn’t completely lack romance it is not until almost the end that there is any real romance occurring. Even without the romance, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing at what was going on and what would happen next. I finished this book within four days and it only took me that long because of being busy with school. It is a very short read but it will keep you hooked until the very end.

“Those We Fear” is quite a page-turner. It is more or less a young adult rendition of “The Turn of the Screw”, featuring an 18-year-old American girl named Maria who comes to Scotland to serve as an au pair following a tragedy that landed her in the Witness Protection Program. Increasingly bizarre and dangerous things happen at the Harley estate, and the line between reality and the supernatural and sanity and madness blurs. With continuous action and psychological tension, the story is difficult to put down, if a bit predictable.

Those We Fear was very well written. It played out live a movie. I was completely engrossed every time I picked it up, and it was extremely hard to put down. I do not read a lot of mystery books, but I am gad I read this one.
