The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby (Book Analysis) - Bright Summaries

    FRENCH JOURNALIST AND WRITER

    Born in Paris in 1952.

    Died in Berck-sur-Mer (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France) in 1997.

    Notable works:

Raoul Lévy, un aventurier du cinéma (Raoul Lévy, an adventurer of the cinema, 1995), biography

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (1997), autobiographical novel

Jean-Dominique Bauby worked as editor-in-chief of the women’s magazine ELLE and had a passion for journalism and life in general. His world came crashing down on 8 December 1995, when he suffered a stroke and fell into a deep coma. When he woke up from it, he was suffering from locked-in syndrome, meaning that although his mental faculties were intact, he was entirely paralysed and could no longer move, eat, speak or even breathe without assistance. This syndrome had been described in The Count of Monte Cristo (1845) by Alexandre Dumas, père (French writer, 1802-1870), but it was not until 1947 that the first case of this rare neurological disorder was medically diagnosed. Bauby's novel The Diving Bell and the Butterfly allowed the general public to learn how it feels to be imprisoned in one's own body, but the author passed away just days after it was first published in 1997.
