      The First German Shepherd Who Howled at the Moon - Delaney Kraemer

      It was daytime and the sun was warm. The German shepherd mother, Leese, was walking in a wooded place with her pup, who had no name. The sun was shining on Leese’s black back. Under their tan-colored feet they felt large twigs, leaves, grass, and moss. Overhead, the trees were green, red, yellow, and orange with big leaves. Only a glimmer of sunshine came through the treetops. Leese had always called herself Leese. Maybe it was a name her mother gave to her. She didn’t know where the name came from. She had never had an owner. All she knew was to be a good mom to her puppy. Being a good mom involved feeding her pup whatever she could find for food, and licking him clean when he got covered with mud.

      The puppy looked almost identical to his mother. The only difference was the puppy’s eyebrows, which were two different colors. The right eyebrow was tan and the left eyebrow was black. The puppy was panting because he was worn out; he had been walking a long time. Leese was not panting because she was too focused on finding a pond, where her instincts told her there were going to be fish. She could already taste the silvery trout!

      Leese was staring ahead, sniffing the air a bit. She found the pond, and both she and her pup ran toward it.

      The pond had plants with small leaves growing around it. The water looked greenish because of the reflection of the forest trees above it.

      The pup started to drink the cool water while Leese stepped with her front paws into the water, splashing as she went. Quickly, she grabbed a fish! The first one she caught was big, and she knew it was for her. Leese gnawed it down. She grabbed a second fish for her puppy. It was a small fish—silver with little black spots. Leese dropped it on the ground for the puppy, who greedily wolfed it down.

      Now satisfied, they ran back into the woods.

      Suddenly, they heard the sharp howl of a wolf. Leese could understand it. The puppy could not, because he had not been on the earth very long. Leese barked to her pup, saying, Run!

      Chapter One: The Black Wolf Appears

      Suddenly, a wolf, a little larger than Leese, ran down a hill, but Leese didn’t see it. She could, though, smell its grassy-smelling fur.

      The wolf quickly turned around and made a little pounce, in place, as it spotted Leese and her pup. The wolf said in a growly, husky voice, I’ll get your pup if you don’t fight me, Tough Girl! Leese knew her pup could not run as fast as she could. She saw the wolf for the first time. Its brown eyes with a hint of amber stared at Leese unmovingly. Its dark, black fur was puffy around its neck and rump.

      Leese tried to make a run for it with her pup, but the wolf blocked her path. Although she was afraid, Leese decided to fight the wolf because she didn’t want the black wolf to get her pup. Both Leese and the wolf rose up on their hind legs and started to growl and bark. They both shook their heads. Saliva flew from both their mouths. Leese began to pant and then bark and growl again. The wolf snapped at the air. The pup was near his mother, whining in confusion. He tilted his head to the right, trying to understand what was going on. This got the attention of the wolf, who noticed the pup, and leaned towards him with his jaws open. He made a sudden snap but missed the pup.

      Leese growled and barked and jumped on top of the wolf. Leese opened her mouth threateningly. She barked in the wolf’s face, saying, If you get near my pup, I’ll fight you again and even harder! The wolf, surprised that Leese was more muscular than he thought, and that she tried to actually bite him, said in a surrendering tone of voice, Okay, okay. He squirmed out of her reach and walked a few steps away. He looked back at Leese and said, See you later, Tough Girl. Then the black
