Chapter 1

Julie looked at her watch.  It was 8:58 PM at her little cottage in Springfox, North Carolina, which meant it was 5:28 AM in Afghanistan.  In just two minutes, her boyfriend, Michael, would pop up on Skype so that they could have a date.

She never thought she'd be dating like this.  Heck, before she met Michael a year and a half ago, she didn't even know what Skype was.  It hadn't been a part of her world.  But then again, her world had been a teeny tiny bubble before Michael came along.  She'd grown in Springfox and left long enough to go to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she majored in Applied Mathematics and minored in Statistics.  Then, she came back to her hometown—and her old high school—to be an Advanced Math teacher at Springfox High.  She grew up here, wanted to get married here, raise a family here, and grow old here.  She always thought there was a nice symmetry to the plan. 

But then Michael came along.

He was big and strong and gorgeous.  He was a Green Beret stationed at nearby Ft. Bragg, which meant he spent six months stateside and six months over in Afghanistan working on top-secret missions with the Army Special Forces.  They'd met in a coffee shop one Sunday morning, which Julie always joked was a total cliché.

That's where the clichés ended, though.

Instead of quiet nights at home, dinners out at trendy restaurants, or other clichéd dates, Julie and Michael spent half the year dating on Skype—and when the internet connection was fuzzy, on the phone.  She missed him like crazy when he was away on deployment, enjoyed him like crazy when he was home, and loved him like crazy all the time. 

Julie patted her hair and checked her makeup one last time, and then fired up her webcam.  She normally wasn't this vain, but she wanted to look perfect for Michael.  They only got to Skype once or twice a week—and only for a few short minutes—and she wanted every single second to count.  He was off fighting for his country, so she owed it to him to show up for their date in something better that an old pair of sweats with her hair piled messily on top of her head.

Hi babe.

Even from 7,100 miles away, Michael's voice made Julie's heart do somersaults.  She didn't just love Michael—she respected him.  He was a smart, honest, decent man, who was so proud to serve his country.  She'd always looked up to the military—after all, her father was a Marine back in the day—and Michael was a shining example of the very best that America's armed forces offered.

Hi sweetie, she smiled.  How'd you sleep last night?  Are you ready for your big mission today?

Julie didn't know exactly what Michael had planned for the day—everything he did was top-secret, so he never talked about his missions other than to say that he was going on one—but she knew it was dangerous.  He'd been trained in parachuting, long-distance running, weaponry, and everything else in between so that he could handle missions on the ground, in the air, and under water.  Before she met him, she thought missions like that only existed in the movies.  Knowing they were real terrified her.  She may not have been able to do anything to make his work safer, but she could make sure he was well-rested before he went off to god-knows-where to do god-knows-what.

I'm ready to come home, he chuckled.  I'm ready to give up sleeping on a cot and sleep with you, instead.

A tingle went through Julie's core when she thought about curling up in bed with him.  The one positive to Michael's grueling schedule was that they always made the most out of their reunions.  It was the same way every time—Michael would get off the plane, run home to shower and get the war stink off of him as he liked to call it, and then he would rush over to Julie's house and ravage her until they were both completely exhausted.

I'm very ready for that, too, she said with a seductive smile.

You look so hot baby, Michael said.  How about giving me a little taste of what I'm missing over here?  Just one tit, real quick.  Please?

Julie giggled and felt her cheeks flush.  She wasn't a sexting or phone sex kind of girl, so the thought of baring her breasts live on Skype made her squirm with embarrassment.

I can't Michael! she squealed.  What if someone walks by?!

Then they'll pat me on the back and tell me what a lucky guy I am, he winked.

Sorry, Sergeant Blakely, you're going to have to wait till you come home to see the goods, she giggled.

Damn!  Good thing I come home in a week, then.  I may explode!

How about you concentrate on your mission and forget about my naked body? she teased.

It's impossible to forget about your naked body, he smiled.  But I do have to get going.  Love you.  Talk to you soon!

Love you, too.  Bye baby! she called out before the Skype connection went dark.

Julie changed out of her sexy v-neck shirt, washed off her makeup, and curled up in bed in her comfy flannel pajamas. 

Damn, Michael, you got me all worked up, she whispered as the ache in between her legs kept her from falling asleep.  She reached a hand inside her pajamas and felt her wet slick.  She thought about giving herself some relief but instantly decided against it.

It's only one more week, Julie, she whispered.  Wait for Michael, and it will feel even better.

Chapter 2

Two days after her Skype date, Julie went over to her parents' house for dinner.  She loved that they lived less than ten minutes away because it meant that she could see them anytime she wanted.  Unlike most college kids, she'd missed her parents like crazy during her four years in Chapel Hill.  She didn't know how Michael handled living in North Carolina—or Afghanistan—while his parents lived in California.  Being that far away was simply unfathomable to her.

It smells amazing in here! she exclaimed as she walked into the house she grew up in. 

No matter how old she got, Julie would always feel like a little girl as soon as she saw her parents' wooden floors—still scuffed by the front door from her tap shoes—and their big stone fireplace.  Every Christmas, her mother hung the stockings over that fireplace and swore that Santa came down the chimney and filled them.  Even though Julie was 28 years old, her mother still stuck presents under the tree that said To Julie, From Santa. 

And, of course, the scent of her mother's pot roast always made her feel like she was 10 years old again.  Only these days, she got to have a very adult glass of chardonnay with it.

It better smell amazing! her father shouted from inside the fridge as he dug out a bottle of water.  Your mother's been cooking like a mad woman!

When isn't she cooking like a mad woman? Julie laughed as she gave her mom a peck on the cheek.  As soon as her dad emerged from the fridge, he gave her a big bear hug.

You'd better start cooking, too, young lady, Julie's mother teased.  Michael will be home in four days, and I'm sure he'll be starving.

Those MRE's are disgusting, her father chimed in with a crumpled up nose.

I'm sure they've gotten better since your days in the Marines, Dad.  When was that, a thousand years ago?

Very funny, her father said, pretending to be offended.

But yes, I am very excited for Michael to come home, Julie said, although she knew his appetite would revolve around sex, not pot roast. 

Julie and her parents sat down to a big dinner—complete with her mother's signature apple pie for dessert—and sat around the table chit-chatting until she started to yawn.

I'd better head out, Julie said.  I've got 25 sophomores, 35 juniors, and a test in differential equations to deal with in the morning.

Take some pie home with you, her mother insisted.

No way, Julie said with a smile.  That stuff is addicting!  I'll eat every bite, and Michael will come home and wonder who the hog is that's pretending to be his girlfriend!

Julie gave both of her parents a kiss goodbye, got into her car, and thought about how lucky she was.  She had a loving family, an amazing man, and a job she loved.  It was a dream she never wanted to wake up from.

Chapter 3

Four days later, Julie darted out of her classroom as soon as the last calculus student scooped up his backpack.  She had a pile of tests to grade, but she didn't care.  Finally, after six long months, Michael would be home in just a couple of hours.  She was so excited that it was all she could do not to skip out to her car in the parking lot.  All she could think about was being in Michael's arms. 

Plus, she had to get home and freshen up.  She wanted this reunion to be one for the record books.

As Julie showered, she couldn't help but be a little disappointed that Michael was always so adamant about her not coming to the airport to pick him up.  When they first started dating, she fantasized about having one of those Hollywood-style kisses right there on the tarmac, like she saw military couples do on TV.  However, Michael always said he wanted to shower before he saw her—which she totally understood since he was coming in
