WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT OUR BOOKS

Nationally renowned historical author Bob Dunbar, author of "To Fame's Proud Cliff," says:

Hot, hotter, and wow!

What? A guy reading a book by a trio of romance authors? You bet, and I had a good time doing it. "Blue Jeans and Stilletos" treats the reader to three stories by three authors exhibiting three separate styles and sensibilities. The stories range progressively from somewhat suggestive to smoking hot. Different from the others as each story is, this collection manages to entertain and hold the readers interest. Looking over the end result as a whole, I would paraphrase Larry the Cable Guy by saying, "Now, that's sexy, I don't care who you are."

    CHAPTER ONE

The bitch is trying to sue us! Marjorie said into the phone receiver she clutched to her ear.

What do you mean, she’s trying to sue us? replied Denise.

Just that.  I got a letter from her attorney.  You probably have one, too.

    Here it is.

Marjorie could hear paper tearing on the other end of the phone.

That bitch is suing us!  How dare she?

Now, what are we going to do about it? asked Marjorie.

This has to be in response to the cease and desist letter we had Kay send saying she should stop giving our books away.  It says we are denying her present and future income by not allowing her to advertise our books.

She’s not receiving any income by giving them away.  Marjorie replied.

Exactly.  She’s wasting her money and ours and besides, she’s the one who didn’t want to be part of The Flip Flop Girls anymore.  Actually, she never really was part of The Flip Flop Girls because she never signed the papers to add her.

I would suggest we call our lawyers and go from there.  I’ll put a call into Kay.  Marjorie hung up the phone and sighed.  That bitch.

    CHAPTER TWO

The signs were all there.  Denise scanned all the emails she had saved over the past several months.  She must have chosen to ignore them then but now they were blaring, accusations, finger pointing and disagreements that were never settled even when she and Marjorie attempted to keep the peace by apologizing.  They both tried to calm the storm before it blew completely out of proportion without success.

Why didn’t I see this coming

Now all she could do was wait until they heard from Kay Bear.  Marjorie had assured her she was positive they had covered their bases legally, but Denise didn’t know how they were going to explain the breakup of The Flip Flop Girls to their fans.  They had signings scheduled and future books in the works which would have to be halted.  How could the bitch turn on us like she did?

Before Denise could sign off her email, a message popped up from Marjorie.  The subject line read No Worries.  As Denise continued reading, she could feel her worry lifted.  According to Kay Bear, Marjorie and Denise owned the rights to The Flip Flop Girls and The Flip Flop Series.  Since Jayden Morgan hadn’t filled out the necessary paperwork to make her an equal partner, she didn’t have rights to anything.

    Thank the good Lord!

With the biggest problem taken care of, it was time to move on and take care of the rest.  The Flip Flop Girls decided they couldn’t lie to their fans about their situation.  They had to tell the truth.  Everyone was going to know soon because Jayden Moore wasn’t going to keep quiet.  She had already begun posting lies on all the social media sites.  It was time for damage control.

    ****

I’ve changed all the passwords, I talked to the bank and we need to go in and remove Jayden from the account.  We need to change our business cards and have some new publicity pictures taken, Denise put Marjorie on speaker phone.  Those are the easy tasks.  We are going to have to issue a press release and decide what we are going to do about a third author for our books.

We have a lot to take care of.  Marjorie replied.  You remember me talking about my friend in Mississippi?  Her name is Gina Williams?

    The name is familiar.

Well, I called her today to catch up.  I told her everything that has been happening here.  She and her husband Bill invited us to come to their lake house and stay for as long as we need.  They will be there the first few days, but then they need to go home and then they will return the next weekend.  I thought we could relax, get some writing done on our new book and maybe we could decide what we need to do to find a new Flip Flop Girl.

That sounds like a wonderful idea.  We could get away from everything and just focus on us.  I’m in.  Denise replied.

We’re going to get through this, Denise.  We were blindsided by Jayden, but we are the stronger two emotionally and professionally.  I know we’ll come out better than before.

I know you are right.  Let’s meet tomorrow and take care of the bank.  We can have lunch and talk.  I think we need to gather our thoughts and make plans for the future of The Flip Flop Girls.

    ****

Two of my favorite customers, Sherry greeted Denise and Marjorie with one of her huge smiles as they entered their favorite restaurant.  You’re missing a Flip Flop Girl.

Denise wondered if the look on her face was as priceless as Marjorie’s.  Explaining what was happening was going to be harder than she thought and this was their first public encounter with questions.  They wanted to keep the explanation on a level so the break up appeared a mutual decision, but it was hard not to blame the person who was really responsible, Jayden Moore.

You ladies look like I hit a nerve.  Is there something you want to tell me?  Sherry asked.  You know I’m a good listener.

And a great fan, replied Denise.

Denise and Marjorie followed Sherry to their table.

Jayden has decided to go out on her own so she won’t be part of The Flip Flop girls anymore.  Denise watched and waited for Sherry’s reaction.  There was nothing.

That’s too bad... Sherry smiled.  For Jayden.  You two are the better writers in the book.  Jayden I could take or leave.  Her stories really didn’t excite me.  But you two, on the other hand, I couldn’t put yours down.

Denise and Marjorie laughed as Sherry fanned herself with a menu.

    Thank you, Sherry.  Denise chuckled.

You’re welcome hun.  So will you ladies take your usual?

Yes, please.  Denise turned to Marjorie.  Let’s get started.  We have a lot of disaster recovery to do.

    CHAPTER THREE

    Good Morning, Denise.

Morning.  Denise attempted a half-ass smile as she opened her front door.

You look like you had a rough night.  Anyone I know?  Marjorie chuckled.

Jared, Denise whispered.  I was doing some research on my story.

Isn’t Jared that cowboy you met at some bar a few weeks ago?

That’s Jared.  I needed to find out if a scene in my story worked so we took turns blindfolding each other and feeding each other different foods.  There was also a little wine.

You look like there was more than a little wine.  Marjorie sat down at the table beside Denise.  So did the scene work?

Oh, yes it did and it was even more sensuous than I thought it would be.  There is something about being blindfolded which make your other senses heighten, and do I mean heighten.  Denise fanned herself with a piece of paper lying on the table.

So what did Jared say about the experience?  Marjorie asked.

He’s willing to do further research if I need.  Denise laughed.

I bet he is.  Not to put a damper on this fascinating discussion.  Marjorie dropped a magazine on the table.  Have you seen this? I’m disgusted.

What now?  Denise picked up the magazine to read the article circled.

She took the stories from The Flip Flop Series and published them on her own.  She had different covers made so people will think they are new.  She just doesn’t stop.

Does she have the rights to her stories?  I thought Kay told us we held the rights under the corporation.

We do.  Marjorie replied.  I’m not sure what to do.  We’ve already spent more money on her than she is worth.  If we decide to fight this, it could run into thousands.  I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to throw away that much money on her or her stupid antics.

Me either.  Denise agreed.  So do we just let it go?  I know people are going to be disappointed when they buy what they think is a new book and find out they are buying stories that have already been published.

You’re right, but that’s her problem. A smile returned to Marjorie’s face.

We’ll just let her hang herself.

We might not have to.  When her readers find out she’s releasing her old stories and calling them new, they are going to drop her.  We’ll sit back and watch and in the meantime, we’ll get started on replacing her in The Flip Flop Series.

    ****

This has to be the perfect place to vacation.  Denise enjoyed the view as they drove along the water.

It is spectacular. Marjorie replied.  This is the first time I’ve been here.  I’m so glad we decided to accept Gina and Bill’s invitation.

Me too.  I think this is the place.  Denise pointed as they neared the next driveway, which lead them to a row of beautiful lake houses.  Each one well manicured lawns in the front of the house, miles of beach behind and the water lapping the shore.  She could smell the freshness in the air.

After parking the van, Bill and Gina came from the house smiling and waving.

Gina.  Bill.  It’s so good to see you two again.

Denise walked slowly, allowing the three of them to get through their hugs and kisses before she interrupted.

Guys, this is Denise Robb, my friend and writing partner.  Denise, these are my good friends Bill and Gina Williams.

It’s so nice to meet you, Denise put her hand out to shake theirs.  Thank you for inviting us to spend time with you two.

A handshake isn’t going to cut it.  Come here.  Gina moved closer to Denise and hugged her tight then Bill did the same.

Around here, we’re all family, Bill smiled.  Let’s get your luggage while we are out here.  Then we can give you a tour of the house and the neighborhood.

That sounds great.  Marjorie pushed the button on the van opening the side doors and back.

Looks like you ladies are moving in.  Bill laughed as he handed suitcases to each person.

You didn’t tell him, Marjorie?  Denise winked.

I like her, Marjorie.  Denise, you’re going to fit right in with this crazy redneck, Bill smiled.  Let’s go get you two settled in.

Denise followed behind as Gina led the way.

    ****

Denise met Marjorie in the hallway after they had both freshened up and somewhat unpacked.

I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.  Marjorie placed her hand on her stomach.

Me, too.  Let’s find something to eat and drink.  Denise started down the stairway.  We really need to buy one of these.

    One of what?

A lake house.  We need to buy a lake house so we can come here to get away from everything and write.  Denise walked over to the window with the best view of the beach.

As soon as we hit the big league, we’ll do that.  Right now, let’s see what Gina has for food.

What about sandwiches?  Gina met them as she came from the kitchen.  Everything is out on the cabinet.  Help yourself.  Bring your food and drink out to the deck and we can enjoy the view.

That settles it.  We’re buying one of these.  Denise laughed as she made her way toward the kitchen.

    ****

We can go for a walk along the beach after you ladies finish your dinner.

That sounds great, Marjorie replied.  It will be nice to get some exercise after driving most of the day.  You two don’t know how much we appreciate your inviting us to spend time here.  With everything that has been going on lately, we needed to get away.  Right, Denise?

    That’s the truth, Denise replied.

    It’s our pleasure, Gina smiled.

Gina was telling me what’s been happening.  It sounds like ya’ll have had your hands full of problems. Bill commented.

Yes, we have and we’re also minus a writer.  We need to find someone to replace ‘the problem’ we just got rid of.  Marjorie smiled.

I’m sure ya’ll won’t have any trouble at all finding a replacement.  But just in case, I’ll keep my ears open.

Thanks Bill.  That’s would be great.

Ya’ll have writers standing in line for the chance to write with The Flip Flop Girls, Gina smiled.  They would be crazy not to want to join you two.

I hope you’re right Gina.  We want to get our next book out in a few months, so that means we have to fine someone soon.

Denise picked up Marjorie’s empty plate and placed it on top of hers.  Why don’t we clean up the kitchen and then go for that walk?

    Good idea.

Gina led the way as Marjorie and Denise followed behind.

I’ll be right here when you’re ready for that walk.  Bill laughed as he leaned his head back in his chair and closed his eyes.

    ****

Are you ready?  Gina shook Bill to wake him.  We’re going for that walk.

Standing and stretching, Bill yawned.  Let’s go.

When they reached the sandy beach, everyone took off their shoes and walked barefoot.

This is great.  There’s nothing like sand between your toes.  Denise stopped dead in her tracks.

Are you coming?  Marjorie watched the blank stare form on Denise’s face.

Do you know who that is?

    Where?  Marjorie asked.

Over there.  Denise pointed towards the lake house right next door.

Shading her eyes with her hands, Marjorie scoped out where she was pointing.

Hi, Nick, Bill shouted and waved.  It’s good to see you here.

The gentleman standing on the deck of the lake house waved acknowledging Bill’s remark then walked towards them.

Oh my goodness, that’s Nick Spencer.  Marjorie replied.

I was trying to tell you that.  Denise stumbled through her words.

I’d like you to meet friends of mine, Nick.  This is Marjorie Rogers and Denise Robb.  They are staying with us for a little while.

Nice to meet you.  Nick shook each of their hands.

It’s wonderful to meet you Mr. Spencer.  I’m a big fan.  Denise mumbled.

Call me Nick.  Mr. Spencer was my father.  How are you Gina?

I’m good, Gina replied.  Why don’t you join us for dinner tomorrow night, Nick?  We need to catch up on what you’ve been doing.

That sounds great.  I’m here all week alone, trying to get some writing done.  I’m on a deadline, but I still have to eat.

I’ll make you my fried chicken.  I know how much you like it.

I’ll be there.  Name the time.

What about six sharp?  Gina asked.

Six it is.  I’ll see all of you then.  Enjoy your walk.

Nick Spencer waved as he walked back to his deck.

I can’t believe we just met Nick Spencer.  Jayden would be so jealous if she knew.  Denise danced around in the sand like a little kid.

Marjorie couldn’t help but smile.  She knew how much Jayden loved Nick Spencer.  She tried to model her writing after his.  She could quote her favorite paragraphs from all of his books.

Maybe Nick will let us take a few pictures with him tomorrow night at dinner.  They could mysteriously show up on the social networks.  We can poke that bear.

    ****

"You ladies write The Flip Flop Series.  I’ve heard of you, but aren’t there three of you?"

Denise glanced at Marjorie in awe of the fact Nick Spencer had heard of The Flip Flop Series but still not quite sure how much she wanted to share about losing the third member of the group.

There were three of us but we lost one member recently.

I’m sorry to hear that.  Did she pass away?

I wish.  Marjorie whispered under her breath making Denise almost choke on her drink of tea.  No, it was her choice to go out on her own.

So are you guys looking for someone to replace her?  Nick asked.

Yes.  It’s only been a short time since she left.  Finding a replacement was on the list of things to do this week.  Marjorie explained.

You don’t have to look very far.  You have an excellent writer right here at the table with us.  Nick pointed to Gina.

Gina put her hands up in the air.  I don’t think my writing is the caliber of these ladies.

That’s where you are wrong.  You forget, you let me read some of your writing.  You would be a terrific addition to The Flip Flop Girls.  If you guys don’t try to convince her to join you, you’ll be sorry.  She’s going to be famous one of these days if I can talk her into submitting some of her work.

You’ve been holding out on us Gina, Marjorie laughed.  I knew you liked to write, but I didn’t know how serious you were.  I would love to read some of your writing.

Me, too, Denise chimed in.  You didn’t tell me about this side of Gina, Marjorie.

My Gina might be one of The Flip Flop Girls.  That would be terrific.

The huge smile on Bill’s face made everyone laugh.

I could help you do some research on your love scenes if you need me too.

Bill.  Gina swatted at his arm.

Don’t forget I’ve read these ladies books.  You just might need me to give you some ideas which we are going to have to test out to see if they work.

Gina picked up the platter and waved it in front of Bill’s face.  Have another piece of chicken.  You need to fill your mouth with food so you will stop talking.

All right, I get the hint.

Marjorie laughed as Bill picked a chicken leg from the platter and took a bite.

I’ll give you some of my writing to read before we turn in tonight.  You can take your time reading it and you both have to promise me you’ll be honest with me.  I don’t want you to feel like anyone at this table has influenced you in any way to make me one of The Flip Flop Girls.

Gina gave a warning glare to Nick.

I can’t wait.  Denise took another piece of chicken from the platter.  If you write as good as you cook, you’re in.

    CHAPTER FOUR

Engrossed in reading Gina’s story, a knock on Marjorie’s door startled her.

    Come in.

Denise bounced in the door and planted herself on the edge of the bed.

    Are you reading Gina’s story?

Yes, and I’m loving it so far.

Me too, Denise smiled.  They are very good.  From what I’ve read, she would make a great addition to The Flip Flop Girls, don’t you think?

I agree.  We would be crazy to lose the chance to include her.  Marjorie replied.

I’m so glad you feel that way.  This would be a win-win for all of us.

I know it would be a good move but what do you mean a win-win?  Marjorie asked.

We would have a great writer as a member of our group who has a lake house that comes along with her.  Denise stood from the bed and walked towards the door.  I’m going to finish the story I’m reading.  We can talk to Gina in the morning.  Agreed?

Marjorie nodded her head.  Agreed, now go back to your room so I can finish reading.

    ****

Well, good morning sunshine.  Did you get enough sleep?

Gina greeted Denise as she took a seat at the counter.

    What time is it?

It’s around ten o’clock.  Can I get you some coffee?

I would love some coffee.  Thank you.  So is Marjorie still sleeping?

I haven’t heard anything from her.  Were you two up late last night talking?  Denise waited as Gina placed a mug in front of Gina and filled it with coffee then moved the sugar and creamer close enough for Denise to reach.

Actually, we both stayed up reading the stories you gave us.  Denise took a sip of her coffee.

So, what did you think?  Gina took a seat next to Denise at the counter.

I really like the story I read.  You have a great voice and your characters leaped off the page at me.  Nick was right.  You’re a very good writer.

    Good morning.

Good morning Marjorie.  Gina stood.  Here take my seat.  I’ll get you some coffee.

That sounds great.  Marjorie joined Denise at the counter.

So what can I get you two for breakfast?

You don’t have to wait on us.  We can make our own breakfasts.  Denise replied.

I know where everything is so it’s easy for me, Gina smiled.  Besides, you are my guests.  What about some scrambled eggs and toast with grits and country gravy?  I know that’s your favorite.

Yes, please, Marjorie replied.  So what were you two talking about before I interrupted?

I was telling Gina the reason I stayed up so late and how much I like her story.

They were great, Gina.  I really liked the story I read.  I just have one question.  Marjorie replied.

    What’s that?  Gina asked.

Why in the world have you been keeping your writing from me?  I thought we were good friends and good friends share.

I didn’t want to make you feel obligated.  Gina replied.

    Obligated?

Denise watched the expression on Marjorie’s face change serious.

The last thing I would feel was obligated.  I would feel happy for you, excited I have another friend who is an excellent writer, but I would never feel obligated.  You’re writing stands for itself.  If you don’t believe me then send some off to publishers and get their opinion.  I would bet you anything you’ll end up with a publisher.

I didn’t mean to upset you Marjorie.

Denise laughed as she watched Gina whisk the eggs just a little harder.  She took the bowl.

Here, let me do that before you whisk them out of the bowl.  You sit down and talk to Marjorie while I take care of breakfast.

I didn’t mean to imply anything.  Gina sat down next to Marjorie at the counter.  Especially that you would be anything but honest with me, but I know you.  You would tell me the truth with just a little bit of sugar coating.  That’s one of the reasons I let Nick read some of my writing.  To me, that was like submitting to a publisher.

But, I could have helped you.  Marjorie replied.

I know you could have and you would have done everything you could but I want to earn it on my own like you have.

You’re right.  I will do everything I can to help you as long as you have confidence in yourself and want to be a published author.

Yes.  I would love to be a published author.

Then how about if Denise and I make that possible?  Marjorie asked.

    What do you mean?

Denise placed a plate of steaming eggs on the counter in front of Marjorie.  We want you to be one of The Flip Flop Girls.

Are you serious?  The smile on Gina’s face grew.  Me.  One of The Flip Flop Girls?  I would love that.

    That’s wonderful.

Denise smiled as she watched Marjorie lean over and gave Gina a hug.  This is terrific.  We have a new Flip Flop Girl.

    CHAPTER FIVE

It was very nice of you to invite us to your dinner party Nick.  Marjorie shook Nick Spencer’s hand.

My pleasure.  I’m sorry Gina and Bill weren’t able to make it.

They had to go back home for the week but Gina said they would be back this weekend.  Marjorie explained.

I’m glad you two could make it.  My family is here for the weekend and I wanted you to meet them.  My wife and Gina are great friends.  I know she would want to meet the two of you.  When I told her I had met The Flip Flop Girls she couldn’t believe it.  She’s a big fan of your books.

    That’s wonderful to hear.

I certainly thought she would be disappointed when we heard through the grapevine that one of The Flip Flop Girls had quit.

    Was she upset?  Marjorie asked.

Not after she found out which Flip Flop Girl it was that dropped out.  She told me she never liked her stories.  She wouldn’t waste her time and would always skip over them and read the other two stories.  I’m assuming those two stories where written by you two.  Nick replied.

That’s wonderful to hear.  Denise smiled.

I hope you’re planning to replace her with someone who can write a better story than she did.  Nick requested.

Can we meet your wife and thank her?  Denise asked.

Marjorie watched Denise glance around the room trying to pick her out.

Come on, Nick waved his hand.  Let me introduce you.

Kathy, I want you to meet The Flip Flop Girls.  This is Marjorie Rogers and Denise Robb.

Welcome.  It’s such a pleasure to meet you.  Kathy Spencer shook both their hands.  "I’m such a big fan of The Flip Flop Series."

We love hearing we have fans and meeting them.  Denise smiled.

Would you sign my books?  I have all of them with me.  When Nick told me he had met you, I made sure I packed them.

We would love to sign them for you.  Marjorie replied.

We can do that before you leave, right now I want to introduce you to the rest of our guests.  I’m so excited to have you here.

Marjorie smiled at Denise as they followed Kathy Spencer around the room meeting all of her friends.

    ****

I hope you ladies had a good time tonight.  Nick and Kathy Spencer walked Marjorie and Denise to the door.

We had a great time.  Thank you so much for inviting us.  Marjorie replied.

It was wonderful to meet you, Kathy and see you again Nick.  Denise smiled.

Kathy loved meeting you guys.  She will be talking about you two to all her friends for weeks to come.  I hope you don’t mind all the extra publicity.

"We love it and we love having you as a fan Kathy.  By the way, did Gina tell you she is our new Flip Flop Girl?"  Marjorie asked.

No, she didn’t.  Congratulations.  Gina will make a wonderful addition.  She is an excellent writer.  She just needs a little confidence boost.

The Flip Flop Girls will be just the boost she needs.  Marjorie replied.

Didn’t you say you were here working on your next book?  Nick asked.

    Yes, we are.  Denise replied.

So, since it will be Gina’s first publication, what if I write your introduction?

"You would do that?  Nick Spencer will write the introduction to the next book in The Flip Flop Series?  Marjorie glanced at Denise seeing the huge grin on her face.  We would love that Nick.  Thank you."

It will be my pleasure.  Let me know when you’re finished, I’ll read it over and write my introduction.

Thank you and thank you again for your generous offer.  We’ll never be able to repay you.  Marjorie replied.

Just keep writing your books.  My wife will be happy and so will I.  Nick winked.

Marjorie was so excited she almost skipped all the way back to the lake house leaving Denise to follow behind.

    ****

Welcome back Gina?  Denise hardly let her put down her suitcase before she hugged her.

What about me?  Bill walked through the door behind Gina.

Denise gave Bill a quick hug and returned her attention to Gina.

I’m happy to see you, too.  Gina chuckled.

We have some wonderful news for you.  Marjorie took her hand and sat down on the couch.

This must really good.  Gina replied.

Nick Spencer agreed to write the introduction for our next book.

    What?  Gina asked.

We went to his dinner party a few days ago and he told us he wanted to read our stories when we are done and he would write the introduction for our next book, Marjorie replied.

    That’s fantastic, Bill replied.

Do you know how much that will boost the sales of our books?  Nick Spencer writing the introduction will be such a draw for people.  Denise clapped her hands.

I’m so excited, Gina squealed.  I need to get started writing.

Denise and Marjorie watched her pick up her suitcase and head towards her bedroom, Bill following right behind her.

I guess we need to follow Gina’s example.  Denise took Marjorie by the hand, pulling her on her feet.  We don’t want to be left in her dust.

    ****

I believe this will be our best book yet.

Marjorie thumbed through the stack of paper in front of her.

The cover is wonderful, the stories are perfect and the introduction is written by Nick Spencer.  What more could our fans ask for?

The release date is next week.  Denise sat down next to Marjorie at the table.  The press releases should have already gone out.  I can’t wait to see how we do.

This is very exciting.  Gina’s voice came over the computer screen.  My first book release, it can’t get here soon enough.  I just wish I was there with you two so we could celebrate.

We wish you were here too.  We’ll just have to Skype you again when we hear anything.  Make sure you keep putting the book and information out on all the social sites.  Also, tell all you friends and family to go out and buy their copy on the release date.

I’ve already told friends and family.  I’ll make sure all the social sites are updated.

That’s wonderful, Marjorie replied.  Keep it up.  That’s how we get the word out there about our new book.

If you can think of anything else I can do, just let me know.  I’ll put Bill to work on it right away.

Marjorie smiled at Denise.  She knew it was true.  Bill would do anything for Gina.  He was crazy in love with her.

Tell Bill thank you and we love him for all his support.  Marjorie smiled.

I’ll do that.  You ladies have a wonderful evening.  We’ll talk again soon.

Bye Gina.  Denise closed the laptop.

When Jayden got on her high horse and left the group, I thought it was going to take us quite a while to recover.  I was so wrong.  Everything is falling into place and working out so much better than we could have ever expected.  Our bad luck wasn’t so bad after all.  Maybe it’s karma instead.

I’m so glad you feel that way because so do I.  You took the words right out of my mouth.  I see only good things in the future of The Flip Flop Girls.

    CHAPTER SIX

The repeated knocking on Denise’s front door broke her concentration.  Who the hell?

Opening the door a smiling Marjorie greeted her.  You’re grinning like the Cheshire cat.

    We made it.

Denise managed to make those words out of what Marjorie was sputtering.

    We made what?

The New York Times Bestseller List.  Look.

Marjorie pushed a newspaper in Denise’s face.

Oh my goodness, our book is number one on the New York Times Bestseller list.  No way.  Our book is number one.  Denise could feel her heart pounding in her chest and she was almost positive the grin on her face was as big as the one on Marjorie’s.

Grabbing Marjorie’s arms, she pulled her in the door and together they jumped up and down and giggled like school girls.

Our book has only been out a week and we made the New York Times Bestseller List.  Not just any number but number one.  Let’s Skype Gina.  We have to let her know.  Denise ran to her laptop and connected.  I hope she’s around her computer.

A few seconds later Gina answered their call.  Good morning you two.  What’s going on there?

Are you sitting down?  Marjorie asked.

Why?  Is it bad news?  Are you sitting down usually means bad news.  You guys aren’t getting rid of me?  I don’t know what I would do if you did get rid of me.

We’re not getting rid of you.  You’re stuck with us.  Denise held the copy of the paper so the camera could pick it up.  We made the New York Times Bestseller List.  We are number one.

All Denise could hear was screaming coming from her laptop.  My first book and it is number one on the New York Times Bestseller List.  Oh my.  Wait until I tell Bill.  This is so exciting.

I know.  Marjorie and I were just dancing around the floor.  We wish you were here to celebrate.

I do too.  That would be so much fun.  I’m sorry I missed the dancing.

Hang on.  Denise took Marjorie’s hand and danced her around the floor.  How’s that?

Perfect.  Glenna chuckled.  I have any idea.  It’s been a few months since we’ve seen each other.  Why don’t you two meet me at the lake house next week and we’ll celebrate and enjoy the beautiful weather before it ends.

That sounds like a terrific idea.  We can be there by Monday.  Marjorie replied.

I’ll have everything stocked so you guys don’t have to worry about anything but showing up.

That’s sweet of you Gina.  We’ll split the cost of the food with you when we get there.

We’ll work that out.  I can’t wait to see you two again.

Make sure you give Bill a hug for us.  Marjorie smiled.

I’ll do that.  See you guys on Monday.  Gina signed off her computer.

What if we go grab some lunch and then I’m going home to pack.  Marjorie asked.

Denise shut her laptop and picked up her purse.  You’re buying.

    ****

With sand squishing between her toes Denise released a huge sigh.  It is absolute heaven here.

I agree.  Thank you again for inviting us.  Marjorie hugged Gina as they walked along the beach.

I’m glad you could come.  You are always welcome here, Gina smiled.  By the way, we are having company for dinner tonight.  Nick Spencer is here this week working on his next book so he’ll be joining us if that’s all right with you two.

    Of course it’s all right.

Denise and Marjorie answered Gina in unison.

That’s good.  I was hoping you guys wouldn’t mind because I ran into him this morning on my walk.  I asked him then so it would be a little hard to take my invitation back.

The more the merrier.  Denise began skipping along in the sand.

You know Denise and I have gotten spoiled coming to visit you here.  Denise wants to buy a lake house close by.

That would be terrific.  Bill and I would love it.  Gina giggled.

Are you sure?  We would be pretty needy neighbors.  Marjorie laughed.

I would love it.  I could leave Bill at our house and write at yours.  I’m sure I would get more accomplished that way.

Sounds like a plan to me.  Now all we need is to find a lake house for sale we can afford. Marjorie pointed to Denise still skipping along the sand, stopping now and then to pick up a shell.  And we have to find a way to keep up with her.

    ****

Dinner was delicious.  Thank you again for the invitation.  Nick Spencer placed his napkin in the middle of his plate.

You’re welcome.  We’re glad you could make it Nick.  Gina picked up her plate along with Bill’s and Nick’s and placed them on the counter.  I’m going to make some coffee.

We’ll finish cleaning off the table.

Marjorie and Denise picked up all the dishes and carried them into the kitchen.  Denise rinsed as Marjorie loaded them in the dishwasher.

Would anyone like cheesecake?  I know Marjorie’s answer will be yes.  Gina took a cheesecake from the refrigerator and placed it in the middle of the table.  Denise followed behind carrying dessert plates and coffee mugs.  Marjorie gathered silverware and a serving knife and brought the pot of fresh brewed coffee with her.

We are going to have to go for a walk on the beach tonight.  After eating all this I’m going to be miserable.  Denise took the piece of cheesecake Gina handed her.

That sounds like an excellent idea.  Would you mind if I joined you?  Nick asked.

Not at all.  Marjorie smiled.  We would love the company.

I was going to save this for later but now seems as good a time as any.  Nick paused.  I was invited to do a workshop at the Romance Convention in New York in a few months.  I plan to give a talk on a subject yet to be determined and I would like you three ladies to join me during the question and answer part of my workshop.

    The room was silent.

Since I’ve known you three, I’ve never seen you with nothing to say.  What do you think?  Nick waited for an answer.

We would love to.  All three women answered in unison.

Just let us know when and where.  We’ll be there.  Denise replied.

Denise is right.  We’ll be there.  Marjorie glanced at Gina to make sure she agreed.

I believe it will be a great opportunity to get The Flip Flop Girls known.  Gina twisted her napkin between her fingers.  I say we go.

All three women jumped up from their chairs, taking turns hugging each other and screaming like teenagers.

It’s set then.  I’ll tell the organizers you will be with me.  I’ll let you know all the details when I get them.  Nick stood up from his chair.  Now, let’s go on that walk we were talking about and I can fill you in on what I have planned.

    CHAPTER SEVEN

I can’t believe we’re here.  Denise left her suitcase in the middle of the floor and walked toward the window.  Look at this view.  You can see for miles.

New York is fantastic, all the lights and people.  Marjorie joined Denise at the window.  This suite is very nice, too.  Which room do you want?

It doesn’t matter to me.  I’ll take the room on the left.  It was great of Nick to give us a suite so we didn’t have to share the same hotel room.

With your snoring, I’m glad too.  Marjorie chuckled.

My snoring is no worse than your talking.  I swear if I wrote down what you said while you were asleep, we could have a book.

That’s the reason we get along so well, we know our limitations.  I wish Gina would have come along.  We would’ve had so much fun.  Marjorie replied.

I know but we have to go along with her and Bill’s wishes.  She had a legitimate reason, don’t you think?  Denise asked.

Of course I do.  They are right.  They do live in a very small suburb.  Gina and Bill are well known and volunteer a lot in the community and at their children’s school.

I know, but do you really believe their friends would be upset with her if they knew she wrote romances?  Not even erotic romances, but close.

I really don’t know.  You and I have never had any trouble with our friends or family about what we write.  They accept it and if they want to read it they do or they don’t.

I think their friends and family would be more supportive than they’re giving them credit for.  Denise replied.

I agree but unfortunately it’s not our decision to make.  Gina said she and Bill talked it about it at length and they both agreed it was best if she tried to keep her identity a secret.  I don’t know how long she’ll be able to do that, but we have to help her anyway we can.

You’re right.  I’m happy she agreed to write as a Flip Flop Girl and didn’t quit all together.  That would’ve been horrible.

You’re right about that.  Gina is a keeper, so I say we do whatever we need to keep her happy.  I’d hate to have to go through again what we went through with the bear.  Marjorie smiled.

    The bear?  Denise asked.

You know, Jayden.  We talked about poking the bear.  Well, now she’s the bear and we don’t even have to say her name.

I love that, Denise laughed.  Priceless.

Thanks.  I’m going to put my things away.  Are you hungry?  Marjorie took the handle of her suitcase.

I’m starving.  You want to try the restaurant downstairs or do you want to venture out?  Denise asked.

I’d say we take a walk around and see what is close and if we don’t find anything we like we can come back to the hotel and eat downstairs.

That sounds like a good idea.  I’ll freshen up and meet you out here in the living room in, say, thirty minutes?

    Perfect.

Denise waited for Marjorie to agree before she rolled her suitcase in her room.

    ****

    Are you ready to go?

Denise turned her gaze from out the window to Marjorie and then back out the window again.

I’m ready.  I just can’t get over this view.  It’s absolutely amazing.

I know.  Did you ever think we would be where we are?  In New York City at the Romance Convention with our book on the New York Times Bestseller List and asked by Nick Spencer to be on his panel during his workshop?  I’ve been pinching myself for the past month.  Marjorie smiled.

Pinch me every now and then, would you?  It’s like a dream come true.

Yes, it is and we should enjoy every minute of it.  So what do you say we start by having a nice dinner and relaxing before everything begins tomorrow morning?

Let’s go.  We can stop by the front desk and make sure our books have arrived.  Denise picked up her purse.

We received confirmation from the hotel saying they received them a few days ago.  I’m sure they’re here, somewhere.

I want to see them for myself, Denise laughed.  You know how I am about things like that.

Yes, I do.  You’re tenacity has saved our asses a few times so I’m not going to say a word.  Marjorie laughed.

    Smart woman.

Denise closed the door behind them making sure it was locked.

    ****

The lobby of the hotel was full of people bustling around.  They made their way to the front desk and waited in line.

    How may I help you?

An attractive, well-dressed man asked without even glancing up from his keyboard.

I’d like to make sure a shipment made it here.  Denise waited for his reply.

    What type of shipment?

Once again the gentleman asked without looking up at Denise and Marjorie.

A little frustrated Denise replied, Books, a shipment of books.

Did you receive an email saying they were delivered to the hotel?

Yes, I did, but I would like to see them.

Marjorie put her hand on Denise’s arm.  The tone of Denise’s voice was telling her frustration.

If you received an email from the hotel telling you the books are here, then the books are here.  Can I help you with anything else?

Let me.  Marjorie leaned in and whispered to Denise.

Dan? Marjorie read his name tag.  Mr. Spencer asked the two of us to come down and make sure the room and everything else was to our satisfaction for our workshop tomorrow.  You see we are sitting in with Mr. Spencer on his panel tomorrow.  I would hate to have to go back upstairs, Dan, and let Mr. Spencer know we weren’t able to take care of what he requested.

The gentleman finally stopped typing and looked up.  Denise noticed Marjorie was wearing her don’t mess with me smile

Oh boy, Dan is going to get it now if he doesn’t change his attitude.  Denise rested her elbows on the desk waiting for Marjorie to continue.

Mr. Nick Spencer?  You ladies should have mentioned you were with Mr. Nick Spencer.  Let me find the key and I’ll personally show you the room.

Denise smiled as she watched Dan search through the drawer for the keys.

    Right this way.

He escorted the two of them down the hallway, opening the door at the end.  The room was huge set up with classroom style seating and at the head of the room a long table with a podium in the middle with a microphone.

Denise was starting to get nervous.  She could feel her knees shaking.  She glanced at Marjorie and could tell from the look on her face she was experiencing some of the same feelings she was.

Right over here is your shipment of books.

Dan showed them a long table covered and skirted.  Behind the table were their boxes of books and also Nick Spencer’s books.  Denise moved behind the table and opened each box to make sure they contained the correct inventory.  Denise nodded her head to let Marjorie know everything was there.

Thank you very much Dan.  The room looks perfect and we’re satisfied with the shipment of books.  I appreciate you taking time away from the front desk to help us.  Marjorie turned on her charming smile.

    Nice.  Denise whispered.

I’ll walk you ladies out and lock up behind us.  The room with be unlocked and ready for Mr. Spencer’s workshop tomorrow.  Dan led them out the door.

Are you getting nervous?  Denise asked as she and Marjorie watched Dan lock the door.

    A little.  Marjorie smiled.

Me too, Denise replied.  I hope when we see Nick it will make everything a little more comfortable.

    Oh my gosh!

Ouch!  Denise snarled as Marjorie grabbed her arm and pulled her against the wall at the end of the hallway.  What is your problem?

The bear.  Marjorie pointed to the lobby.

No way.  Denise couldn’t believe her eyes.  Checking in at the front desk was Jayden Morgan, the last person either one of them expected to see.  What the hell is she doing here?

I don’t know but I do know we can’t let her see us, yet.

Yet?  What do you mean yet?  Denise asked.

Maybe she’s here for the Nick Spencer workshop.  How surprised do you think she’ll be when she sees the two of us on his panel?

There was the smile of Marjorie’s.  Her don’t mess with me smile she used on Dan earlier.  That smile came in handy from time to time.

You’re right.  She loves Nick Spencer.  That has to be the reason she is here.  Denise watched close to make sure they weren’t spotted.  We need to sneak out before she sees us.  Hopefully we can avoid her until tomorrow.

Let’s stay right here for a few minutes.  She should be checked in soon and we can leave when she gets on the elevator.

I can’t wait until tomorrow, Denise smiled.  The bear is going to get the surprise of her life.

    CHAPTER EIGHT

    Good morning, ma’am.

Denise attempted a smile as she glanced at the cute young girl with a cheery face behind the room service cart handing her a silver tray with a charge ticket and a pen to sign.  Making sure she added on a tip, she handed the tray and pen back.

I hope you have a wonderful day.

There was no change to her expression as she pushed the room service cart into the room then turned to leave.

All people who are perky before noon should be shot.

Is that coffee?  Marjorie walked out of her room tying her bathrobe.

Yes, it is.  There is also some fruit, scrambled eggs and a few bagels.  I hope that’s all right....

Denise stopped talking leaving her mouth hanging open as she watched Dan walk out of Marjorie’s room shirtless and looking gorgeous and lay his jacket over the arm of the couch.

That sounds good.  Thank you for ordering.  I didn’t think I would be hungry after dinner last night but I’m starving thanks to Dan.  Marjorie winked at Denise.

Denise watched as Marjorie helped Dan button his shirt he had slipped on.

I’ll see you later?  Dan asked as he tucked the tail of his shirt in his slacks and picked up his jacket.

Yes, you will.  Marjorie kissed him lightly and walked him to the door.

Waiting until the door was closed Denise asked, What the hell?

I couldn’t sleep last night so I went down to the bar and ran into Dan.  Turns out he is a really nice guy and very, very sexy.  Marjorie smiled.

He was an asshole when we met him at the front desk.  I guess that’s just his work personality right?  Denise laughed.

You really need to learn to give people a chance.  You miss out on a lot of great relationships.

Oh come on.  Dan’s not a relationship.  He’s a one night stand.  A gorgeous one I might add but still a one night stand.  You aren’t ever going to see him again.

Who knows but there is one thing for sure, he was great research for our next book.  Marjorie rolled the tray over to the table.  Not to change the subject, but I checked my emails and we received one from Nick with all the information about today.

Great.  When do we start?  Denise spread cream cheese on half of one of the bagels.

Nick’s workshop starts around two.  He wants us to be in the back until he introduces us then we’ll join him during the question and answer part.  No one knows we are going to take part.  It will be a surprise.

I hope everyone will think it’s a good surprise.  What if they don’t care if we are there?  Denise asked.  That’ll be a bummer.

Don’t be silly.  Everyone will be excited we’re there.  Remember, our book is number one on the New York Times Bestseller List, Marjorie replied.

You’re right.  Everyone will be excited...everyone but bear.

Bear, right.  I’m sure this won’t set well with her.

Who cares?  She’s made her choice.  Call it Karma.  Denise smiled.

After the question and answer part is done, we’ll be autographing books with Nick at the back of the room.

Fun, I can’t wait.  This is going to be so exciting.  Denise wiggled with excitement.  We’re going to autograph books with Nick Spencer.  How great is that?  Who would have thought?

Pretty dang great.  Marjorie picked up the other half of the bagel and took a bite.  We have about four hours to kill.  Any suggestions?

There are some other workshops this morning.  I’m sure we could find one we could attend.

I think Nick emailed us an agenda of the rest of the workshops.  I’ll go get my tablet and we’ll see what we can find.  Marjorie slipped into her room and came out reading her tablet.  I think we might have a problem.

    What?  Denise asked.

The agenda Nick sent me; well it looks like bear is volunteering at his workshop.  She is the coordinator of the question and answer session.  Marjorie sat back down at the table.

    What does that mean?

That means I can’t believe she doesn’t already know we are going to be there.  Maybe we should check with Nick and see who he has told.

That’s probably a good idea.  We don’t want to tip her off if we don’t have to.  Denise watched as Marjorie typed an email to Nick Spencer.

According to Nick, no one knows anything about us being there.  He apologized she was allowed to be part of the workshop.  He didn’t have a say in who was chosen to volunteer.  He thinks she must have some connection with the people who are putting on the Convention.  Marjorie continued reading.

We could ask him to have her taken off the volunteer list.

Why would we want to do that?  We can use this to our advantage.  We knew she would probably be in the audience.  She could have left but now...

Now she has to stay and watch us answer questions and autograph books with Nick Spencer.  Otherwise, she’ll look the fool if she walks out on her responsibility.  How cool is that?  Denise chuckled.

It’s very cool.  I can’t wait until this afternoon.

    ****

Sitting in a small room off the side of the table, Marjorie and Denise could hear everything Nick Spencer was saying.  Denise was taking notes so if she and Marjorie were ever asked to do a workshop they would have an idea what they needed to do.

He is such a pro.  Do you ever think we will be that comfortable talking in front of a large crowd?  Marjorie asked.

I don’t know.  Right now my knees are knocking.  Denise laughed.

I know what you mean.  Nick has to have done lots of these.  Maybe after we get a few under our belts, we’ll be as comfortable as he is.

From your mouth to God’s ears, Denise replied.  I hope we stay as popular as he is long enough we can do as many presentations as he has.  What time is it?

Almost three.  He has been talking for almost an hour.  It has gone by so fast.  Marjorie replied.

That means we’re up in a few minutes.  Are you ready?  Denise smiled at Marjorie.

I’m ready.  I’m sure we’ll do great.  You and I don’t have any trouble talking about our books.  It’ll be fun.

You’re right.  It’ll be fun.  Denise tried to convince herself she was telling the truth.

Shhh, he’s introducing us.  Listen.  Marjorie put her fingers to her lips.

My profession affords me the opportunity to meet a lot of people, many whom wish to write a book of their own.  Well, I don’t have to tell you many don’t follow through with their dreams, which is a shame.  Anyway, now and then I have the privilege of meeting other authors.  This summer, while trying to meet a deadline at my lake house, I had the pleasure of getting to know three very special people who are also authors.  I have to give my wife credit for me knowing who they were when I met them the first time.  She is a huge fan of their work.  Now we both are.

Denise and Marjorie watched as Nick Spencer took a sip from the glass of water sitting in front of him.  Their hearts pounding so loud they were sure everyone else could hear them.

"I wrote the introduction to their latest book ‘Flip Flops on the Beach’ which soared to the top of the New York Times Bestseller List.  I would tell you all about it, but I thought it would be more interesting if they told you themselves."

Denise and Marjorie smiled as they listened to the crowd ooh and ahh.

The crowd erupted in applause as Denise and Marjorie entered the room each pausing to give Nick Spencer a hug then taking their seat behind the table.

Welcome ladies.  I noticed there are only two of you.  Would you like to introduce yourself and fill us in on where the third Flip Flop Girl is?  Nick Spencer took a seat in his chair.

    I’m Denise Robb.

I’m Marjorie Rogers.  First, we would like to say thank you Nick for asking us to be part of your question and answer panel.  This is a huge honor for us.  Nick Spencer writing the introduction for our latest book in The Flip Flop Series was exciting, but this is much more exciting.

It’s my pleasure to have you here.  As I told the audience, my wife is a huge fan of The Flip Flop Girls.  She is the reason I knew your name when we met this summer at Gina William’s lake house.  So about Gina...

"Gina has decided she wasn’t ready for the publicity which has come along with The
