Sherry Raby: I grew up in a small borough in Central Pennsylvania, and still remain in a small borough in Central PA. I visited many different areas, and though winters can be harsh, I prefer the seasonal changes to no change. I've been writing since I was 14. The books back then weren't very good, but I've never lost the inner push to keep it up. I published a small children's story in Highlights magazine in the late 1970's. This was my first paid article. It took me almost 35 years of tears and hard knocks to get to where I could be able to publish a book. It was physically started about 10 years ago. Silent Screams by Sherry Raby. I am releasing When the River Rises. It's the stories of my ancestors through grandparent to grandparent to grandparent. I am married and have a total of eight children, and eleven grandchildren. I have migrated back to the hills of Northern Central Pennsylvania and find inspiration almost every day just by looking out my windows.

    Jules - Sherry Raby

I would like to say thank you to my husband.  John is and always will be a biker at heart.  Although he much prefers fuel burning, ear drum breaking, drag racing to anything else, he has occasionally been known to watch a race on TV.

When we were younger, I remember going to the track and cheering him on as he blurred past me.  I shouted when he didn’t do something right, and cried if he lost.

He never made it to the big league but he was always my winner.

I love you John, and if you ever read this, know that all I may become, or am, is because of your faith that I CAN DO IT.

    Chapter 1

Sam heard a whiny noise that was getting louder and closer; that ended outside her house.  She and Billie went to the window and looked out.  Sam screamed and ran to the door. It’s Jules, Billie.

Jules was Sam’s younger sister; the oldest of the twins.  Sam ran out to greet her.  Oh my God.  Jules.  Look at you.  You’re freaking all grown up.

Jules gave Sam a look that said, ‘No kidding.’, but said, Do you realize how long it’s been?

Sam looked at her then laughed.  No I didn’t until now.  It’s been almost four years.

You and Billie have been together for three.  She looked beyond Sam.  So where is this infamous Billie that settled my sister down?

Sam put her arm through Jules and took her into the house and introduced her to Billie.

Jules was about four inches shorter than Sam and bent her head back to look up at Billie.  A tall one, aren’t you?

And you’re a little one, aren’t you?  Billie countered.

Jules laughed.  I like her.  Che adatti l’un l’altro.

I told her long ago that we suited each other.  She was just stuck on friendship. Billie told Jules as she winked at Sam.

She gave Sam’s hand a small squeeze as she went to the door.  I’m heading to the store.  You want anything?

Do you have the list?  Sam walked to her and gave her a quick kiss, mindful that Jules was probably openly gawking at the exchange and not wanting to embarrass either her or Billie.

Yes, Dear.  I’ll be back soon.  She put her hand on Sam’s cheek.  I’ll be out a while, maybe bring something special home for supper.  If you want, have her stay here.  It’s not like we don’t have enough room.  Have fun.  See you in a couple of hours.

But you don’t....  Before she could finish her statement, Billie was in the car.

So that’s the infamous Billie.  I like her.  She speaks Italian, too.  Impressive, Sis.  I didn’t know you had such good taste.

She gave Sam a wicked grin.  I never thought you would be the switch hitter either, but....it works for you and that’s all that matters.

Sam laughed.  I’m glad you approve.

Give.  What brought you back to the states?

A couple of things.  One of them is I didn’t want to be around when Jan talks to Mom and Dad.  Even though the talk could be quite interesting, I thought maybe we should have some distance.  Jules was chuckling.

What’s up?  Something wrong?  Sam looked serious.

Not to worry, big sister.  All is really good, just not what Mom and Dad are expecting.  Especially from Jan.

    Is she pregnant?

Hell, NO!!!!  She’s thinking of going into the Priesthood.

Sam sputtered, spitting her tea across the table.  A priest?  Not even a nun, but a priest?  Sam’s face was contorted.

I hope Mom and Dad take it that well.  Jules was laughing as she wiped the tea from her shirt.

Sam whistled, crossed her arms, and looked at Jules.  That’s part of the reason, and I’d say a damned good one, but what’s the rest?

It’s sitting out front.  She nodded toward the door.

    The bike?

Yep.  I’ve decided to join the racing circle.  I’m pretty damned good at it.  I’ve won a couple of races in Italy, and around Europe.  I wanted to go worldwide.  She shrugged again and stared at Sam.  You want to try talking me out of it like Mom?  It won’t work.

Hell no.  I want to watch you race.  She jumped up and hugged Jules.  Mom and Dad can’t say their kids are run of the mill or all the same.

You got that one right sister.

Jules got up and pulled a key from her pocket.  I brought you a present.  She walked out the door, letting it open.  Sam followed; watching her unlock the seat and raise it, then pull out a package.  She came back to the house.

For you.  Uncle Mike sent it to you.  Aunt Mary sends her love, too.

Sam ripped open the package and instantly felt tears come to her eyes.  Inside the wrapped box, was a small picture album.  There were pictures of her and the girls, Nonna and the whole family."

Uncle Mike said you would like to have it.  She took the book from Sam and pulled a small envelope from the back, handing it back to Sam.

Inside the envelope was a small locket with Sam’s picture and Billie’s.  But how?  When?

Jules shrugged and smiled.  Apparently Nonna knew a long time ago what it took you two a long time to figure out.

Sam handed the locket to Jules and turned for her to hook it.  Her fingers went to the locket, bringing it up to her lips to kiss.  I love you Nonna.  Thank you.  She whispered.

Billie got home a couple of hours later.  Sam and Jules had already downed a bottle of wine and were sitting at the table laughing over something, with tears in their eyes.

Sam jumped up.  Hello, my love.

Billie looked taken aback.  She leaned back and stared at Sam.  You’ve been drinking.

Quite astute.  This one.  She whispered theatrically to
