About this ebook

Every Queen needs a King.

Briana Gooding has a lot on her plate and being a full-time social activist leaves little time for romance. When the NFL’s most controversial quarterback approaches her, she suddenly finds time.

NFL standout Caleb Kelly is known for his exciting plays on the field and his messy personal life that leaves many women thirsty to be a part of his harem. When he decided to take a controversial stance against the National Anthem, he found a strong ally in Briana. It’s only a matter of time before the activists are viewed as the country’s most dangerous couple and harassment ensues.

Senator Jay Edwards and his wife, Sanora, are making big plans for Briana and Caleb and have no qualms being their private support. When their detractors threaten those plans, it’s time to use a deadly reminder to show who’s really in charge.

All is fair in sex, love, and power.

Superpower is the second book in the State of Affairs series. It deals with social justice, activism, political aspirations, and if true love conquers all. It is a New Adult erotic romance.

    The burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That's not our job. Stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique for our oppression. If you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do.

    ~Jesse Williams

    Dr. King was unpopular while he was alive ― he’s only popular now because he’s dead and not a threat to anyone. But he was a threat to the status quo back then and the people, the so-called ‘moderates’ used to say, ‘Well, we’re with you, but you gotta be more patient. We’re with you, but you shouldn’t protest like this.’

    ~ John Legend

    I don’t understand what’s un-American about fighting for liberty and justice for everybody.

    ~ Colin Kaepernick

    "Negroes,

    sweet and docile,

    sweet, meek and kind:

    Beware the day

    they change their minds."

    ~ Langston Hughes

    Prologue

    "I sat down because I don’t believe in what the flag stands for. Think about it. The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776, the Star-Spangled Banner was composed in 1814, but the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t happen until 1863. So, who was the independence for? Who was the Star-Spangled Banner written for? Not for me. Not for my ancestors. It doesn’t apply to any minority group here.

    Now, if I lose endorsements, receive hate mail, and death threats, then it only proves what I did was right and I stood up for what I believe in. I’m willing to die for what I believe. I’m not disrespecting the troops nor am I disrespecting any officers. I’m merely invoking my First Amendment right. If everyone else can, why not me?

    Senator Jay Edwards turned off his TV and stared blankly at the dark screen. His Facebook page was full of comments, demanding he say something. His phone rang off the hook all morning. He couldn’t even enjoy watching SportsCenter without the commentators pretending they were fake woke so they could sound intelligent for everyone else.

    Jay loved it.

    Famed NFL quarterback and reigning Super Bowl champion, Caleb Kelly, made a controversial protest against the American flag. He simply sat down. He made no obscene gestures. He didn’t say any curse words. He remained silent.

    It couldn’t have come at a worst time.

    It couldn’t have come at a better time.

    In the current political climate of the country, it was no surprise the reaction was deeply divided. Other athletes came out to shame Caleb, while many celebrities supported him. What was more astounding was the number of veterans who also had his back.

    As Jay’s MO, he always waited until he received more information before making any type of statement. It was why he was admired; he never became extremely angry and jumped in so he could be a trending topic. He chose his words and actions very carefully at all times.

    Now that Caleb had the nation’s attention, it was time for Jay to make his move. He was sure the star athlete would not say a word to him. Caleb was adamant on how he really felt about anything conservative and Republican based on his IG feed.

    It was time to use another approach.

    So, what do you think? Sanora asked as she walked into the study. She showed her husband Caleb’s speech as she was rather fascinated by it.

    Jay revealed a cunning smile. I think we just found Briana’s soul mate.

    Book I – Long Live the Chief

    One

    Six weeks prior…

    Fighting the oppressor was long and exhausting.

    Sleeping with him had the same effect.

    There would be a time later for hushed dirty talk, gasping moans, and body clutching as they climbed higher to ecstasy. There was more important business to worry about.

    Another unarmed black male was killed. Another video. Another week.

    Same bat time. Same bat station.

    As Briana Gooding consulted with other activists and figured out a plan, she briefly wondered if the videotaped shootings were some sort of sign and warning – you keep revolting against us, and we’ll videotape your lynching for the world to see, nigger – and she just wasn’t paying close attention to the message.

    She wondered if she was wasting her time. Protesting, meeting with families and loved ones, scheduling meetings with the mayor and city council took up a large chunk of her time. It didn’t leave much room for a dating life, not that she had a lot of prospects to begin with. And she barely saw her friends as it was.

    Still, Briana couldn’t give up. She was the voice for those who couldn’t speak, who were too afraid to. She would take the beating if it meant she protected hundreds of others.

    Once she changed her direction of protest, her voice became clearer. Briana’s online following exponentially grew and those in power began to take notice of her. It didn’t stop the daily threats and racist comments she’d received on a daily basis on social media but her support base became louder.

    She met with the Los Angeles mayor and had a cordial meeting over tea and crumpets. While she was reluctant to say the meeting was a success – the mayor seemed to have humored her more than anything – at least she was able to establish a cordial relationship.

    Are you going to stop protesting in the streets? He asked.

    Are you going to do something about the biggest gang in the world masquerading as the LAPD? She countered. Do you ask this of the other protest groups or are we the special ones?

    The mayor tightened his lips. We’ll be in contact, Ms. Gooding.

    Oh, you know we will.

    She wondered if being a woman was the reason why no one took her seriously. She wondered if her message would’ve been clearer if she were a White man and she immediately knew the answer – yes.

    She finally closed her laptop for the evening and stood up to stretch as she contemplated her options. She didn’t know what she needed more – alcohol or dick – to relieve the growing frustration that built up inside her. She decided neither now would do. She rolled out her mat, stripped down to her skivvies, and began to do yoga.

    Hopefully, that would calm down the growing impatience inside of her.

    ~~~~~
    In short, Caleb Kelly knew better. In long, he was a young, single and rich man who had a lot of options, even if those options were questionable.
    As he sat across from dinner at a very expensive restaurant with a woman he met on Instagram, it was when Caleb began to reevaluate his life choices.
    He was getting up there in age, in terms of his professional football career. Quarterbacks normally didn’t play past 40 and Caleb was steadily flirting with 30. After a horrible season where everything seemingly went wrong, Caleb was finally able to make it right again with a strong preseason performance for the new season.
    He knew what the type of woman he was attracted to – thick body, slim waist, long hair, and colorful personality. It was who he followed on Twitter and IG. It was what he was used to dating from his college days.
    It was now becoming old and tiresome.
    The banging body aspect was never old and he was a sucker for a big butt and a smile. The personality part, however, drove Caleb to question why he didn’t knock back a few shots of Jack Daniels before he left his home.
    It would be the last time Caleb would let his dick think for him. So, where do you see yourself in five years? He asked.
    Hopefully with a big house and a Mercedes, the woman softly replied.
    Caleb waited for her to finish the rest of her sentence when it occurred to him she said everything she needed to say. Oh? He blinked.
    Yeah, the woman replied, I don’t know where I want to live but I definitely want a sleek SLK.
    Caleb forced a grin. He might as well picked the woman from a site named Golddigers R’ Us. He knew there was something unique about her, beginning with her name after an astrological sign. It suddenly escaped his mind which sign it was until he had a brilliant idea.
    Did you ever get teased about your name?
    Being named after an astrological sign, I was relentlessly teased! The woman replied. And of course, the song didn’t help.
    Song? Caleb asked.
    Yeah. Sign of Aquarius? She shook her head. I still get that.
    Caleb and Aquarius. It didn’t even sound right together. It was a definite sign. Are you ready to go?
    Aquarius revealed a sensual smile and blinked her eyes. I’m more than ready.
    ~~~~~

    Caleb was a full-blooded male with a healthy appetite for sex. He figured if he paid Aquarius to fly up to see him, they both knew condoms and moans were also a part of the package. As the driver headed back to his home, Caleb took out a document and handed it over to his date.

    What’s this? Aquarius asked.

    That is a non-disclosure agreement, Caleb pointed, that means whatever happens tonight will not be repeated to TMZ, or any gossip blog. He’d heard the rumors about his reputation via his mother, and that’s when Caleb knew to officially put the kibosh on any more gossip.

    Aquarius shook her head. I’m not signing this. What if you rape me? I won’t be able to report that to the police?

    Caleb thought about arguing his point but quickly concluded it didn’t matter. An unlawful act would immediately make the agreement null and void but it
