Born in Nantes in 1828, Jules Verne initially began studying law before turning to writing in 1852, publishing a play and several novels. His friendship with adventurer Jacques Arago (French author and explorer) led him to cross paths with other explorers and scientists of the time. His first novel Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863) was a huge hit, and marked the beginning of his Extraordinary Voyages series which is made up of 18 short stories and 65 novels, including Journey to
