    CHAPTER 1

Nick answered the call and hurriedly stowed his gear into the SUV parked behind his house under cover of darkness. The street was partially illuminated by pretty fairy lights draped outside the houses, where the inhabitants gorged on turkey and overcooked fare. He climbed into the vehicle and drove slowly towards the intersection with Church Street. Looked both ways. No traffic. Almost there.

The light was red. He edged forward slowly, eyes on the light.

Edged forward a little bit more. Looked both ways.

Edged forward a little bit more. If he wasn’t alert he’d be in the middle of the road.

The engine idled until he saw the green light.

He hit the gas and roared towards the right, swaying with the momentum of the vehicle as it made the turn. He checked his rear view mirror.

No traffic. He checked his speed.

Above the limit. Slowed that shit right down.

The dash was lit up like a Christmas tree. He hit the button on the steering wheel and dialed home.

Everybody’s waiting. Where are you? The constant complaints were getting old. He was tired of it but it was his life. For now.

Daddy! The little girl ran up to him, arms in the air, demanded her hello hug. He put down the gifts on the inner step towards the living room.

Hey, pumpkin. He scooped her up in his arms and squeezed her tightly.

Are we going to make snow angels now? You promised. She played with the tassels on his hooded parka.

Maybe in the morning, sweetheart. Your Daddy has to work tonight.

Please? She kissed his cheek and hugged him tightly; the kind that made his heart want to break into fragments.

Come on now, you know how this works. Do as your Momma says. Be a good girl. I’ll pick you up in the morning. Deal? He held out his pinky finger and she hooked hers into it and they gave one shake. He kissed her on the forehead and reluctantly passed her back to her Momma.

See you soon, Susan. She watched him walk back to the SUV and start the engine but when he looked up at the house she’d already gone back inside and had closed the door. He waited, though he would be late if he waited much longer, but he looked up at her window.

There it was. The curtain moved and he
