I hear her screaming and turn over to see my wife clinging to the side of the bed. I reach out my hand, but the room stretches into the distance, taking her away from me. I call her name, but no sound comes. I turn as I hear our daughter, Casey, calling for me from another room, but my voice is broken and she cannot hear me shouting for her. I turn back to my wife and watch as her face is wrapped in a thin material, devouring her features.

Let me go, she mouths, silently.

Tears spring to my eyes as I lunge across the bed, but I cannot reach her. I grab at the sheet and try to drag myself across to her, but the cover turns to sand and slips between my fingers. I try to call out to her again, but she begins to fall as the bedroom floor cracks and opens into a burning pit. She lets go as the bedroom stops stretching away from me. I finally scramble to the edge of the mattress and look down.

Goodbye, Michael, she calls as she disappears into the abyss.

My name is still echoing in my ears as I jolt awake. My heart is beating as if I have just completed a marathon. I take a few breaths and compose myself. It's not the first time I've had a dream like that, and I doubt it'll be the last. I lie on my side for a few moments and that's when it hits me. I have an unerring feeling I've done something completely stupid. For starters, I can't remember the night before. This is usually how a murder mystery begins. Some poor guy wakes up with no memory and finds his palms covered in blood. There will be some broad with a bullet hole in her head slumped in a corner. Usually, there's a smoking gun nearby with only the lead character's fingerprints on it and he only has himself to blame.

I pry open my sleep-encrusted eyes and glance down at my hands. They're clean, thank God, but there is something different. Something warm, something breathing.

I turn my head to the left and groan at the sight of the naked body sleeping next to me. My gaze follows the bumps of her spine that poke out from beneath her dark red hair until they reach the top of her buttocks, half covered by the thin, summer sheet. The humidity in the room has stuck the fabric to her pale skin. I should feel good. It's been a while since I had a woman, but all I feel is shame. Have I become the kind of guy who goes out to bars and takes home the first gal that throws herself at him? That's not me at all.

My friend Jack would give me a manly embrace if I told him about this. He'd buy me a whiskey and raise
