    Introduction

    Ode to Hypo-pigmentation

Hypo-pigmentation is the lightening of an area of skin

This is caused by a decrease of skin melanin.

The most common types of hypo-pigmentation of the skin

Are post-inflammatory hypo-pigmentation, vitiligo and scarring

PIH is caused by decreased pigment after infection or injury to skin

Vitiligo is an acquired autoimmune disease with loss of melanin

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin which causes white spots

Pityriasis alba is a mild childhood eczema with pale macules or dots

Concealed cosmetic consists of applying a cosmetic pigment medication

The use of lasers has improved the treatment of hypo-pigmentation

An alternative treatment of laser is tattooing of the depigmented skin

The use of ultra violet therapy on the depigmented skin may help in darkening

-An original poem by Kenneth Kee
