Betrayal of a Witches Secret - Darrel Day

    Betrayal of a Witches Secret

Rachel had settled for a time, trying to regain her strength. So many things had happened and she was still unsure how she would recover. Her life had been changed forever by the loss of her first unborn child. Salem Massachusetts would never be the same either. She had seen the witch hunts and knew now what her coven had dealt with as they strived to establish their place in witches’ world. The witches of the forest had been started by her great, great grandmother outside of Salem. Thirty-seven men and women had come together in the newly started forest. The fire that had consumed the forest the year before left fertile, waiting ground for the new growth.

Rachel remembered the stories her grandmother and mother would tell her. They spoke of the deaths of over half of the beginning coven. Though some that were hung were not witches, they were hung simply because of association with her family. Seldom were the males ever killed but the females were hung sometimes without even a trial. The males could speak out in their own defense while the females were not to be heard. The only time they could protest was as the rope began to tighten around their necks.

Of the thirty-seven that went forward with the coven, only nine lived to set up their coven. It did not take long for the Forest to be considered evil and filled with witches. Only the bravest men went inside the trees canopy in search of their prize. Bringing back the head of a witch was a great triumph and a notch in the victors cap. A man could raise his status simply by bringing a witch back, dead or alive. It was much more enjoyable to the village of Salem if the witch were brought back alive. The people enjoyed watching a witch kick her feet as the life was choked out of her. Seeing a witch burned alive often caused a witch frenzy that resulted in many innocents being executed just to satisfy the hunger of the village.

The forest itself grew at an unnatural speed. Seedlings went to yearlings and yearlings to nearly full grown trees in a year. The trees grew close together and filled in the empty spaces with new seed of their own. The trees were aware that the witches would be a part of their being and grew in accordance with the coven. Leaving an empty space in the center of the forest, they gave a hiding place for the coven. The power of the forest would not be completely known to the witches until after they had done battle with Salem Village. The forest was strong and gave ample protection to the witches from intruders. Only other witches could safely enter the forest. Sadly, the forest showed no prejudices in the beginning. White witches and dark witches alike were allowed inside.

The Forest was also aware that there would be a battle or two within their boughs. Witches would vie for the throne and others simply wanted to have a safe place to call their home. The white witches had won their right to dwell in the forest and have it protect them. The fights had at times been fierce and there had been lives lost. Still, the cost was worth their freedom from evil and the chance to do good things for deserving people. The greatest loss for Rachel had been the child that she and Jacob had created, lost in a battle to save the entire coven from death. Now, she carried the baby that would be born a princess. She too would fight many battles to save her coven.

Where is your mind, Rachel? You have not eaten nor spoken since the battle with Anastasia ended. It was a great victory and you even saw Sarah finding a home to dwell in. You now carry your daughter inside of you and need to think of her well being.

Rachel looked up at Lila and smiled a weak smile. She sighed as she stood and walked to the table. She knew that Lila was right and that Ellie needed to be nourished even if Rachel herself were not hungry. She wondered what was next in her life. She knew only that the baby would grow faster than a pure mortal’s child. She was going to need to be prepared for Ellie’s birth. She would also need to find a way to protect her until she was strong enough to defend her own self. She took some bread from the cooler and made a sandwich for herself.

My Queen, I fear that something is coming our way and it is not a good something. The wind is blowing strangely in the forest and the trees are moaning. They feel the same thing that I do and yet none of us are quite certain what it is.

"We have already killed Anastasia and Eli. There cannot be a lot of evil with any kind of power that is strong enough to do battle with us. If so, then we need to know who they are and where they come from. Do you think that you can do that for us, Angelina?

I will do what I can for you, Rachel. Please remember that the last time I did this didn’t turn out to well.

That was not your fault and we will deal with any issues that may show themselves.

I will take the thoughts outside and try there.  It might be safer that way.

The Forest was bursting with color as Angelina stepped into a small opening. The cabin was close enough to reach in an emergency yet far enough away to be safe. She did not want to harm Ellie in any way. She closed her eyes and listened to the trees.

Little witch, you are but a sapling yet you feel so strong. We will open the portal to your far tomorrows so that you can see what lies ahead.

Thank you for that, forest. I am young but my family was strong in their powers and it carried to me. Let us look to see what we may expect from the future.

The wind blew and the trees opened their branches so that the night sky could be seen. A million stars danced in the sky as Angelina opened her eyes. Stars flew by, racing towards some unknown place on the earth. She sat in awe of the beauty that was hers to observe alone. She heard whispering in the wind as it blew her golden hair away from her ears. She sat up straight as if to help herself hear the whispers better.

We have not met one another, little witch. Please allow me to introduce myself to your mind.  I am Arlone, keeper of the Sacred Wiccan Scrolls. I have seen more than any one being should see perhaps but... I am here to tell you a secret.

"A secret, you say? I don’t understand. If
