      Hurricanes make people crazy. Everyone stays up too late, over eats and drinks too much, as if trying to match the weather, excess for excess. I was no exception. Outside, palm trees bowed to the wind, capitulating without a fight, while I bowed to a different, but no less reckless force: needles and ink.

      Even though the tattoo artist worked on my lower back, the buzz of the needle made my jaw ache. I grit my teeth and took a deep breath. Mami used to say 'la belleza duele.' Beauty hurts. I knew exactly what she meant, even if she was probably rolling in her grave right now because her preciosa daughter had taken off her pants and bent over so a man could inject ink into her nalga. Well, not really my ass, more the dimples right above my waist. Still, my pants were unbuttoned, unzipped, and there was air on my cheeks.

      If the dead could see the living, my mother was definitely screaming a litany of incoherent Spanish at me right about now. And Papi, hoo boy, if Papi knew about the needle in my butt, he'd have SWAT out here arresting everyone in the place. As precinct capitan, he would totally do it too, which was why I'd told him
