    Sense Despair

1- Tense and Hungry, I became Aware

    Of the subtle distinction between

    Empathy and Suspicion.

Both of these adverse rules of judgement

Became motors for my machinery of

Persistence to survive others wrath of

    Dangerous sympathy and pinpointed distrust.

    -I maneuvered through these streams

    That pushed equally against me

Using more humor than hate to force myself

On beyond rules of judgement seeking

    Acceptance from those I disliked-

    Frustrated and disguising my Anger,

    I roamed within a gauntlet

Of speculation, false promise of redemption,

    Empty hands offering temporary strength;

    Sustenance, salvation…

-And, I found those willing to give me

A fair chance. The same people I

Remembered who had done that every time

    Before the Despair.

In went positive thought and repair.

    Out went negative currents

That did not purposely ensnare me

    But unwittingly fed self-empathy

And a misanthrope’s view of Humanity.

I tuned my mind into the world then

Realizing I alone did not suffer

    That fateful watershed of empathetic

Or suspicious emotions poured onto us

    By those wanting shelter from

    Our presence that contradicts their

    Tentative fluctuations of control.

2- Frightened drivers sell your cars.

Your fear of bills and unpredictable

Price of fuel justifies the sell off

Of your death machines. The White

    Passageways of freeways and

    Interstates bare reefs and memorials

    Of citizens dead that became

Excuses to raise rates and terrify

You as you navigate unaffordable vehicles

    To occupations paying small wages.

The Uninsured, a great evil in our society,

Hover through fog created by databases

That study our awareness of how a

    Ledger dictates our Fate. Hospital

Parking lots fill with taxicabs acting

    As temporary emergency ambulances

For injured or ill people that cannot

    Ever afford medicines and supplies

    To grant them sustainable health.
