About this ebook

When I was in primary school, we used to get many topics for essay writing. My most favorite topic was ‘My Train Journey’. In those days, I used to write all the good things about the train journey. Following is an imaginary excerpt from an essay on ‘My Train Journey’.
“I love traveling by trains. Last year, I got a chance to travel to my aunt’s place by train. We boarded the train at Samastipur railway station and we were going to Darbhanga. When the train arrived on the platform, I was amazed to see the giant sized steam engine. It was looking like a black beauty. Some staffs from my father’s office had come to help us in boarding the train. They arranged our luggage in the compartment. I was lucky to get a window seat; after a small round of fight with my younger brother and sister. When the train started running on the track, I was able to see the engine from the window. The engine was looking magnificent when it was belching black smoke from its chimney. The whistle of the train seemed like music to my ears. The rattling sound of the wheels was similar to the sounds of percussion instruments which are played along with song and music. Once the train stopped at a small station then my father bought peanuts for all of us. We spread a towel on the seat to keep the peanuts on it. We loved having those peanuts. The chutney further enhanced the taste of peanuts. ..............”
Once I grew to become an adult, my love affair with train journeys dwindled with my advancing age. It was a pure coincidence that I landed in a job of a sales representative. The nature of my job involved too much travelling that too by trains. Thus, over a period of time I was exposed to too much of the train journey. After spending more than a decade in my job in the sales, I am no longer in a position to love the train journey. I no more enjoy traveling at all. I just feel sick at the sight of a train approaching a platform.
When I was a student, the population of India was 700 million. It has grown to more than a billion now; meaning more than 300 million people have been added in this country. This is the main reason of the growing crowd in the trains. For me, a train journey is more a pain than a pleasure which does not allow me to hum the hit song from a 1970s Hindi movie. The song goes like this, “Gari bulaa rahi hai, seeti bajaa rahi hai.”
